Cowes Sealift

Felix was lifted 14 months ago and I decided to try Sealift at cowes, I phoned to book a lift and I was given a date and time, a little concerned the weather could spoil plans I was told not to worry and I could rebook if the weather was foul.

You can see a Yacht being finished here.

Note there are two large waiting pontoons, but we were not waiting long at all.

This is why we are here, dirty props, note anodes only year old, shaft anodes gone !
Note how the trim tab anodes have been fitted under the tabs, I presume this is to protect the props, they have a really good view from there.
Has anyone seen or herd of this before ?

International Cruiser Uno, a good advert 14 months of growth, not too bad at all, a little water line green that I could have reached from the pontoon.

They have a massive selection of antifoul and I needed a petty touch up in one or two places.

You take your own anodes, I needed bar anodes and I was loaned their launch to buy some from a local yard, you can fit the anodes yourself or they will do them for you. The standard clean includes jet wash and Prop and shaft scrub.
Extras include Anode fitting and full antifoul.
They didn't charge me anything for the antifoul touch up

I was particularly impressed with the state of the boat after the lift, usually I have found dirt and grit all over the decks, with rusty silt from slings and chains but there was none of this, the boat decks were perfectly clean.

They make the service very family friendly.
They loaned me the 15 hp work boat to play in and take my wife and daughter ashore who went shopping and later returned in the local water taxi .

The whole thing cost £155 (plus anodes) and was enjoyable.
I particularly liked the idea of being there so I could see the anodes had been changed and the props had been cleaned.

Last year I paid a professional to do this during the 4 week lift out and the Marina told me he had forgotten to change the anodes before it got lifted back in, the engineer denied this and said they had been done and charged me accordingly.

Highly recommended, full details here
http://www.sealift2.com/

I believe we benefited from an increased 2 knots following the scrub, the hull wasn't too bad but the props were grubby.
That's about 10% which could be self financing if I get an extra 10% fuel economy, but it is too early to state that as a fact.

Has it moved? From the photo it looks like it's on the East side of the river, but i'm sure when I used it, it was on the West side, and I think you could also walk ashore. Maybe it's just my memory playing tricks again.

Hi Nick,

Technically I think I used Sealift 2 and it is on the East side now just past the chain ferry.
You can not walk ashore, but they loan the work boat out or you can get a local water taxi.

The old Sealift 1 is further down river on the west but as far as I am aware it is now obsolete ??

Well spotted

Ace post Daka with great pictures. I've read very good things about Sealift although I've never used them. I think this year I'll give them a try for my mid season scrub and inspection when we are having a lazy Monday in Cowes.

Regards Paul.

Well that could go some way to explaining why Jeronimo has been a bit off the boil so far this season!

Hi Pete

It was £94 inc Vat when I last used Sealift. Looks like he's hiked his prices a bit. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

How did they clean the shafts and props - acid?

[/ QUOTE ]

They cleaned with a scraper, hard graft !

I had some acid with me that I sprayed around the paddle wheel and some hard to reach areas.

That was my attempt to paint out the name, if your mate would like the originals I can email them to him.

Hi Richard,

They did a lot more than a scrub.

They changed the anodes and touched up antifoul.

Incredible value, they worked really hard.

The best bit was actually being able to see it was done, last year I have doubts about the Yard I chose to lift out in for 6-8 weeks.
The same yard the previous year bodged up a shaft anode which I had to get a diver to sort out.

I saw my anodes been changed and the attention to detail that went into the whole job.

It is still good value.

Cheers

Pete

Useful report. I went past there the other day and thought about it. From what you say they do the work and you watch - sounds good to me!

I think they ought to put a card on the Folly notice board for those like me who forgot to take the phone number as they went past.

We have used it for the last two seasons for a mid season clean and anode change. In fact it was on the other bank a bit further up opposite East Cowes marina in 2007 and moved to the other bank in 2008.
Cant recommend it highly enough. Incredibly helpful staff but the price did go up a lot last year.

Was on the verge of booking for lift and scrub when just happened to mention their prices to my local yard - who offered to match them.
It's a competitive world out there!

just before you go ahead..........

There is a huge advantage in that sealift lets you work on your boat.

I went for a scrub and shaft anode change.

I could have done a deal to lift out at a marina for a scrub for a similar price BUT

once I needed anodes then I would have needed to pay for a block off and relaunch.

This is where you save with sealift, I jumped in their runabout and bought anodes, they fitted them for me , no fuss.

Re: Cowes Sealift response to questions

Official response to some of the questions follows

Re location - we were positioned on the west side of the Medina river next door to UKSA, but we moved to the new site on the east side of the river just in front of GKN last year March (2008). You can actually see the old site from our new location so its very close. Our new location is very much better than the previous one as it offers pontoons for waiting craft and we have sufficient depth to operate throughout varying tides.

With regard to the comment about us "hiking" our prices - our prices in 2009 are all within 4-8% of our 2008 prices and some prices have actually come down. We did make the boat length bands a bit more granular this year - for example they now break down into 5ft ranges instead of 10ft ranges - e.g. 25ft to less than 30ft, 30ft to less than 35ft. etc. Our antifoul prices have either stayed the same or come down by 10-12.5%

Hopefully you were also made aware of the voucher packs and total care packs that we now offer.

Our total care pack includes one lift, clean and overnight antifoul paint service, plus two additional lift and clean services during the year. This voucher pack is offered at a bundled discount such that if you are having an antifoul service and plan to come back for one additional lift and clean service, then it is more economical to purchase the total care voucher pack up front as the return lift and clean service is a few pounds cheaper and the next one is free. The price for the total care package is typically cheaper than most owners pay for a single annual lift out and we paint the boat for you. We believe, therefore, that our Total Care Package is a cost effective alternative to taking your boat out of the water over the winter.

Apologies - should have clarified that my yard matched everything on offer : storage ashore to do my own painting, free anode fitting, etcet etcet.

That's competitive. And without the hassle of flogging over to Cowes. My point was simply awareness-raising about what this recession could mean in financial gain if we only bother.

But whether the result will be as good as the specialist (and very user-friendly) firm over there remains to be seen.

See you in the Confessional?

Re: Cowes Sealift response to questions

I have been asked politely by PM to clarify my interest in this company.

I apologise if my last post caused any confusion, Sealift saw the post and sent me an email to respond to some questions.

The following ( as copied from above ) was sent to me by Sealift to post here on their behalf.

I do not have a commercial interest in sealift, I am just a satisfied customer that thought the readers may be interested in reading how it works.
I have been wanting to go for two years but didnt really know what to expect.

Here is a copy of the email

As to my occupation, well I wish it was connected to the Marine Trade but unfortunately not, it is not usually so exciting .
Most of the old MOBO regulars will remember as it used to be included in my profile details, they will know it has nothing to do with this orthis /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Cowes Sealift response to questions

I second everything Daka has posted. I have no connection either.

Have had the boat on there a number of times. Nice guys to deal with. They made SWIMBO a coffee too, while I was away in the work boat gettng anodes.

Re: Cowes Sealift response to questions

As a raggie, I also had great service at the SeaLift (no connection etc etc...) a few weeks ago. They got my prop looking like new and replaced the anodes I'd taken with me. The small one on prop had gone completely!
