Cowes Floating Bridge Removed from Service

Is it still for sale? A few of us could club together, buy it and charter it to IoW council for a fabulous profit.

The problem the council have now is they have created ramps from concrete which make it a useless ramp for any other vessels so not only do they have a white elephant ferry but also a white elephant landing stage as no one thought to see if it worked before spending another small fortune on adding the concrete to the exuisting ramps which served for FB5 . I have seen excuses that the problems are due to the new breakwater but this was known about years ago so if this was due why did someone not consider the feffect of the breakwater on the tide before building the new ferry. This needs a public enquiry to get to bottom of what has transpired and who now has the millions of taxpayers money which has been paid for something which is not fit for purpose. I assume proceedings will be issued soon though which might give some visibility of who failed to deliver a working service. Little comfort I suspect for the residents though or E Cowes marina and businesses.

Ah. I hadn't realised that the ramps had changed. These people are wasted in local government. They should be working in defence procurement, where their talents would be truly appreciated.

ITYWF that the ramps have been almost completely rebuilt, but I assume to the same gradient as previously. It was one of things that delayed the introduction of FB6.

There has been quite a bit of activity on and around FB6 again today and and by the end of the day attention seemed to be focussed on the prows. Perhaps they are actually getting round to carrying out some substantial modification at last.

They are either now working towards getting it back in service or preparing it for a new life elsewhere. If we wake up one morning and find it's gone we will know it is the latter.

Heaven knows how they will solve the problems caused by spring ebbs and of the depth over the chains.

You would have thought if they had any credible plan they would have had the courage to issue some form of explanation via the County Press or other local medium to explain what they propose and yet there seems to be a complete silence from the council as to how there are proposing to address. I gather even the leader of IWCC has no idea whatsoever how to address the the growing concerns of residents and vistors but maybe they will try to tow away FB6 on a barge in middle of winter where it will be lost at sea . I wondered if they have even thought of insuring it though?

The artist's impression of the proposed redevelopment of the Cowes waterfront features the old floating bridge:

I wonder what they know that the rest of us don't.

This image suggests that the redevelopment intends significantly widening the Medina at that point, with the bridge a distant image from the ramp on this side.

Similar artists impressions of Poole Quay had the channel looking so wide that freighters could easily do U' turns in front of the bridge,

Presumably this is to lie about the proportionality of the planned eyesores they portray.

Artists' impressions, don't you just love them?

Here are a couple of others which I find bear a very tenuous link to reality, courtesy of Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay. Seems no-one else finds them misleading.

Not a single safety warning notice in sight. Love the dinghies nonchantly sailing where there will be turbulence and rip currents at short notice. And who is going to clean the algae from those delectable pools?

Just spotted this Tweet posted by the Floating Bridge yesterday:

"Can I request when leaving the Floating Bridge can customers please refrain from celebrating making it to the other side. The party poppers have started to make a mess..." :D

Love it. Second only to crossing the Equator,
