Courtesy flag off Yarmouth?

Too subtle/obscure perhaps.

Was that referring to my reply? If there's anywhere where an organised group is going to get worked up by the 'wrong' flag it's NI and I gave an anecdote from the weekend where they didn't.

Strictly speaking no, you moaned about someone wearing the flag of another country. But you thought you were moaning about someone wearing a defaced flag.

Actually I believe he m^Hcommented on a courtesy flag being worn by a vessel flying an ensign he supposed was a defaced british ensign but which others are speculating, given the circumstances (oligarch's superyacht, courtesy flag) may well have been the ensign of a british overseas territory (e.g. bermuda).

On the subject of who to complain to about breaches of flag etiquette, I thought that's what yacht club flag officers were for

Not sure about that, here is a wee test, go down the street and ask a random sample of your neighbours what colours the flag of the province of Ulster is. I bet you get more wrong answers than correct ones.

The one for the nine counties of Ulster?

Indeed, and probably from people who think Ulster is part of the UK.

Exactly. If an Australian yacht made it all the way to the UK, would Alan moan about them flying "a defaced blue" without a warrant?

It would help if those who take flag etiquette seriously also took the some time to learn about the range of flags out there.

Do you remember the case last year of the poor sod who got all the way from the Cook Islands to the Scillies only for someone to lose his rag here because he thought they had defaced a blue ensign with the EU stars? Welcome to Little England.

I would bet that you have never been threatened with a big fine by men in uniform in Agadir because you didn't have a Moroccan Courtesy Flag?

Ah, you have a woman's Moroccan courtesy flag, my lord.

Dont quite understand that comment. However, should you ever sail away from home waters, you will find that officials can be, well, officious in their interpretation of customs and rules. Your opinion will count as a big fat zero.

I would advise against being a chancer.

Adapted from Blackadder.

And that has what, precisely, to do with the skipper from the Cook Islands who was accused of defacing a blue ensign with the EU stars?

The fact that in the UK, apart from a few Gammonistas, no one much cares. But in a fair bit of the rest of the world, people do. And can make your life more troubled than it needs to be.

Pretty shitty in Home waters as well, only advantage is the language.

To a degree perhaps, but the idea that they are happy to turn a blind eye to you paying kids to steal for you but not to turn a blind eye to flag etiquette is a bit far fetched. Especially since they had already turned a blind eye to a flag etiquette 'issue'.

Your opinion will count as a big fat zero.

Would your opinion on theft count as higher than zero?

I would advise against being a chancer.

....and play it safe by receiving stolen goods instead. (Or in this case in addition to!)
