Re: ok, money where mouth is

If you want more multihull stuff, there are a few multihull only magazines, but you won't find them in newsagents, subscription only.

There will never be many multihull articles in the mainstream magazines, because they are of less interest to the big majority of readers. I would guess that the proportion of multihull articles at the moment probably refelects the proportion of multihull boats.

As a a confirmed monohuller I would still much prefer to read articles about handling multihulls or whatever than endless articles about chartering in Timbuk 2.

An interesting outcome, given the howls of anguish that went up in Scuttlebutt when she moved in and remodelled YM.

Checking back, we nearly always have a number of threads on how bad the mags have become at this time of year. Is it the mags, or us? More time to kill on reading them in the winter? Or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) perhaps?

Dolphins

They were with us both ways across the Irish Sea and then the Bristol Channel. At night they gave us a stunning phosphorescence display, we could see the perfect green outlines of dolphins 10ft down swimming about under Top Cat. An experience I shall never forget, shame I could not catch it on camera.

But I do have 30 secs of pitch black and just the sound of the wind, like a 'funny' postcard, I shall call it 'dolphins by night'.

They kept the helmsman company during those quiet watches, absolutely wonderful.

for once, i bought a YM from WHSmugs, paddington branch much to the surprise of the security bloke at the door, and was not surprised that the radar detection aid should be described as "YM tested" when we know by now that perusal of the manufacturers literature is all that implies. However, JJ's stuff on plotters quite clearly tells you that "... not carried out comparative tests but provide (from manufacturers data) ... an idea of what is available and what features are important." and given that proviso, the article is very good.

Re: Diatribe

The risk in haunting a forum is that you can, on impulse, post a silly sweeping generalisation that then becomes cast in stone. Seems I did that with my comments about professional journalists, and from James Jermains summary biographies it is clear that I was completely wrong. The only fair thing to do is to admit it, and apologise to those concerned./forums/images/icons/blush.gif

Whatever the problems of the mags lack of sailing knowledge / interest clearly isnt a factor. So sorry, James and Kim. I shall shut up.

Re: The mystery then

must be why this edition raises my ire.

The loony "Question of Seamanship" answers over the last couple of months could, couched in this learned style, lead the less experienced sailor to some pretty strange conclusions.

Throwing spinnaker and gear away might strike a novice as being a clever escape but anyone with the gumption to haul one up and enjoy it's power might have a bit more clue, and like to hang on to a grands worth of kit.

A bit of weed on the prop. Straight to dinghy launching and men in the water mid Channel then. Not try stopping the boat and then running astern for a while to see if it might drop off.

Nobody, least of all me, doubts you and the teams abilities or backgrounds as writers. For me that's why soft advert/articles, like the pieces I first mentioned, and dangerous advice are so troubling.

I don't doubt there might be a commercial reason for the editorial but the supposedly expert stuff is a really bad show.

You are back on then?

Not wishing to change the topic, but good to see you have managed to log back on. All okay now?

For the record I wasn't a big fan of the prop advice...but I can tell you that Paul Gelder is looking at this thread and having a think about some of the comments raised. Was up to his neck in clearing Feb issue when I popped into his office yesterday.

Re: Yes I\'m back thanks.

I hope something can be done to get the show back on the road.

Over the years the stable of mags have put a lot of store in encouraging and advising beginers. It's done some good work but it's difficult to do longterm without becoming repetitive and/or loosing a bit of focus but whatever accuracy is everything.

I'm going to have a rest from reading YM after 20yrs or more but I do wish the title well.

For what it's worth I think there's a lot of mileage in yachting journalism, PM me if you'd like to bounce some ideas around.
