We have the possibility of moving to Olso and are currently trying to decide whether or not this would be a good move both personally and professionally.

One of the factors will be whether we can move the boat, and whether or not we can afford berthing costs etc when we are there. At the moment we have a pontoon berth in a Scottish east coast harbour at less than £1k per year (27ft sailing boat). I presume that we are unlikely to get anything that cheap near a capital city but would be interested to hear from anyone with local knowledge about what we are likely to pay around Oslo, and what availability is like.

Also, does anyone know what the rules are about importing boats (tax etc). Any other advice or opinions also very welcome.

Thanks

Don't know much about Oslo berthing costs, but as to importing the boat, you probably won't have to pay any tax. The relevant regulation is at https://lovdata.no/dokument/SF/forskrift/2008-12-17-1502/KAPITTEL_5-1-2 - (only in Norwegian). The gist is: No tax if you move to Norway having lived elsewhere for at least 5 years, the boat is less then 15 m, you have used it abroad for at least a year before importing it, and you do not sell it until 2 years after moving to Norway.

The EU RCD directive applies here as well - so no difference.

I follow Erik Aanderaa a Norwegian on YouTube a message to him might get a response, he is also on Facebook.

Good idea, I've seen a few of his videos myself. Definitely worth a try..

jonkare: Thanks, that is really useful.

I moved my sigma to Oslo from the UK. The thing I would say is the season is very short. Oslo fjord can start to freeze in early September and not usually defrost until late may....

That said I loved sailing thete, kept the boat in Oslo for 4 years and made it right up to Tromso before I went south again.

Marina fess in Oslo were more expensive than most of the UK but less than the solent. I was able to keep the boat ib Oslo without any tax. Check out the efta rules.

Thanks, that is really useful to know. I had heard that about the sailing season, but I have done a bit of cruising in the Norwegian fjords, so I know that I would be happy to pay that price. Do you mind me asking roughly what sort of cost I would be looking at. The only place I have ever berthed a boat is in a small council run harbour and I suspect I've been a bit spoilt. I don't even have a particularly good idea of what prices in the rest of the UK would be.

There is great variation in price (commercial or run by a boating club)
Found two places little bit outside Oslo
8000 and 12000 NOK for a summer.
winter I would think You must pay around 8000 NOK on the hard.
A bubbled winter dock is 5000 NOK and a short lift out is around 3000 NOK
there are places in the fjord that is free of ice all winter, some Norwegians think sailing is an all year activity.

Possibly worth joining the cruising they have lots of people sailing these areas, as well as Harbour Local Representatives - though can hardly be more expert than knuterik.

Would there be any issue over loss of boat VAT status by leaving EU (though Brexit ma.y make U.K. worse than Norway exemptions)?

Prices quoted look a lot cheaper than almost all of the U.K., albeit perhaps for a shorter season (though we were sailing in West and South Norway on April and May last year in lovely weather, and all the harbours empty as no local boats sailing but lots from Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Poland etc
