So this is the sort of thing you should not do.

My "Cost Per Trip" this season works out at £21,465 per trip so far.

That was to Newtown Creek and back via Gunwharf Quays, and was because of a late launch, refurb etc.
Hopefully each trip out will reduce that figure.

I have a suspicion that some much larger boat owners have a much lower figure than this 😭 😬

Refurb Costs
£11,500
Marina Fees
£7,980
Servicing
£1,635
Fuel
£350
£21,465

Think I am around the 8k mark. Hoping that figure is going to come down soon.

I've always said to people, If you write it down on paper as to what it all costs, and the time and effort that is needed for this boating malarkey, then it makes no sense.
Thankfully so long as I keep enjoying the boat and the social side that it brings, then I'll keep doing it, but as soon as the fun stops, then as they say in Dragons Den......I'm Out :giggle:

My calculation for our 30' mobo with twin Toyoya based Nanni 175 hp on shafts looks like this.

  • In recent years, the value has remained unchanged, so maintenance and upgrades keep it status quo.
  • I'm in the marina daily, all year round, but it's a 10-minute trip and usually in conjunction with something else, so it doesn't have an extra cost.
  • We don't go to restaurants just because we have the boat, so that cost is the same as if we didn't have it.
  • Food and drink on board is the same as at home at normal shop prices.

As you may know I'm in Denmark, where the general price index is a bit higher than the UK.
Politicians here believe boat owners are rich, hence insurances are taxed. The more your boat is worth (insurance sum), the higher tax.

Some year refurbs or upgrades have been notable, but in all cases voluntary

I think @SC35 lives quite close to their boat which has it's advantages. With us it's just over an hour and in a completely different environment to where we live. Therefore, perhaps we have more of an advantage in that we can be on holiday without having to take the boat anywhere. Therefore cost per use is a lot cheaper.

You can't put a price on life quality, being happy and content.

I once was between boats, didn't like it all and the Admiral soon asked me to find a boat instead of pacing the floors with eyes staring wildly

Absolutely and been there, done that.

Being boatless for a year or more wasn’t good and we ended up buying an interim boat as we were undecided whether to go for a yacht or another mobo. We ultimately ended up with the Hardy and a day sailer which we are now selling with a view to something slightly bigger to sail. The Hardy is a keeper as long as we remain with a mobo.

+1
We are fortunate to be moored in a nice marina in a very nice town so our use of the boat is the same as yours - we just love being aboard and if we take the boat out it is a bonus.

Cost per trip isn’t a metric that has ever crossed my mind until I read this post 😁

Which all goes to show you’re much better off chartering our Princess F55 😂

The reality is if you use your boat lots it makes sense, if you don’t it makes no sense.

New car £20k

First trip to Tescos effectively cost you £20k.

Trip to McDonalds the next day brought the cost down to £10k for each trip.

Realise that diesel isn’t your biggest cost and enjoy boating.

After 40 years of boating we seem to be using ours less and less. The boat is on the Costa Brava and I made the mistake recently of getting a hotel while we were there to keep SHMBO happy and content.
However because of hotel costs we now stay a week instead of maybe three weeks on the boat.
Might give it up this year.
May this be a lesson to you all

Depreciation isn't really about the value dropping, it's a way of accounting for the capital you invested in it over the expected lifetime. If you sold it you'd have more money so keeping it is a cost - a realistic estimate needs to take that into account somehow.

Our boat is less than a mile from home. The marina is in the village where we live.
Yet being at the boat always feels like a different and generally more relaxing world.

We didn't go out this weekend but were occupied with cleaning and small jobs on the boat. I don't mind the boat cleaning, engine checks and repairs (eg fitted a new fuel tank sender today). I find the physical work quite satisfying.

We did spent Saturday night on board.
Obviously we do take the boat out but its not necessary to take the boat out of the marina to have an enjoyable weekend.

I did sort of estimate a cost per night spent on the boat and it came to about £100 .
(I don't include food in that as its necessary to eat regardless).
