Cost of re-engining?

I suggest you replace the engine as close as you can with "like-for-like", in that way fewer other parts /fittings will need changing.

I replaced my Bukh 20 with a second hand Bukh 24. I was charged about £650 for a professional to do the job for me and that included hiring a crane for a day. I did some of the disconnecting and re-connecting of wires and removing and replacing pieces of wood etc.

All the ancillary parts remained in place for example I used the old wiring loom (it basically just plugs in) old fuel system, old prop, engine mounts etc.

I then sold the old engine ( it was a runner) for £500.

4 hours? That's amazing! On another thread someone recommended allowing about 15 weekends to swop engines.

If you have worked out the minor changes you have to make to the bearers, water intake and exhaust this is one of the easiest swaps around as I explained in more detail earlier. A 1GM can be removed without the use of a crane, although the replacement Nanni is bit trickier. Not really practical to do it in that short a time, because most people take the opportunity to clean up the engine bay, replace or repack stern glands, add insulation etc, but no reason why it can't be done in a steady weekend.

That is not always possible - or desirable. One of the benefits of fitting a different engine is getting the features that come with it (smoother, quieter, freshwater cooled etc) plus having an engine that is till in production rather than a 30 year or more old design. Many engines are in need of replacement because the old one has become uneconomic to repair.

That was the time to physically lift out the old one ( 3 people) bolt on the new beds and bolt down the new engine and connect up the shaft, wires and exhaust. Time was spent beforehand planning, designing the beds, soaking the nuts with penetrating oils and cleaning. Time was spent afterwards modifying the front engine cover / steps to allow for the alternator. Boat was a Hunter 26 which has good access to the engine.
We had a scaffold tower behind the boat and 3 people could lift the Yanmar out but we did enlist help from a passer by to lift the new one up to the cockpit.

This thread is old, but I now know the answer; just short of 12k. (Engine/tank/prop/rope cutter/bearers/cables/batteries/box to put engine panel in/new cutlass bearing/exhaust pipe & outlet/water strainer & hull fitting/anode/echo sounder)

Dylan in particular will enjoy this!

this is one of the best threads I have read for ages

really, really enjoying it

can anyone advance on £11,000 for a new engine

Dylan

£12,000! Presumably that includes gold plating the engine and building a boat round it?
