I have just had a quote from Bellingham Charts to cover UK to Azores and then to Gibraltar which works out at £435. How does that rate with other suppliers?

chart costs

What carts do you need? Detail of Plymouth to Landsend, passage chart, Detail of Azores. £ if new £63

I like your thinking, I was thinking about having a plan B and including the cost of the coast Spain and Portugal in case I have to divert.

I'll make further enquiries - many thanks

That's what I'd do.... coupled with a Reeds Almanac. Get you into most places. Maybe pick some ports that you'd consider diverting to along the way and have charts for those as well if you really felt you needed the extra. Can't see a whole set would be worth it....Especially if you have a plotter too.

So if you were to pick three ports of refuge that you made sure that you had sufficient onformation on before you left - maybe north Spain; middle of Biscay, and Brittany - all weather/tide, then which would you pick?

Middle of Biscay - La Rochelle has a large marina.
L'orient?
Les Sables D'olonne?
Brest
Just from memory, my charts are a few miles away at the moment.
Spain I have no personal experience of except for the south coast. I know Vigo is an option though.
Someone else here will add to this no doubt......

You can get into Brest, come what may, with Camaret off to one side if it suits.

You can get into shelter by gaining the Baie de Quiberon, rounding Ile Hoedic, with plenty of options after that.

You can get into the huge ria at La Corunna, then find one of several places to stop.

The rias of Vigo and Pontevedra are accessible in most weathers, with 'breakwater' islands to seaward.

That should be enough for one trip....

Also Gijon, Northern Spain fantastic place. Good access, lovely city, fun loving people

Great cider festival there too.

NW Spain is the best bit- Bilbao nice place to stop too; couple of big marinas inside the entrance and good metro system straight into the city (great place). But fairly far out of the way to the East in Biscay if you're just heading south. Worth a detour in my books. Bypassing Santander of course.

Don't know when you'll need them so may not be useful. I have Admiralty charts from Gijon to Lisbon - some bought new 2010 and some second hand 2005 ish. I'm back in UK by July. £60 plus p&p if you are interested then PM me.

When to buy?

With my luck, within minutes of buying the charts I need, a new set will be published. Is there any schedule of when publications are due to be released?
I was looking at the Imray ones.

Greetings,

Since my original message I have been able to get hold of a chart covering Plymouth/Azores/Gibraltar exactly what I need ( also cover Maderia and Canaries)

I also have an Imray Azores and Gibraltar area charts all I need now is a 2012 Reeds and I'm sorted.

Heck of a lot cheaper than my original quote.

Best wishes David
