It's that time of year again! The antifouling job needs doing - so which one to use? I used Blakes Tiger Cruising last year but on my drying, swinging mooring in Chichester Harbour it didn't last very well. I've come across Coopers (which I believe is made in Southampton) and at £49.95 for 3 litres seems like good value.

So the question is has anybody used it and if so what are your opinions of it?

Many thanks
(Jaguar 25 - Aramis)

I'm also on a drying / swinging (C3) in Chichester(Emsworth).

Last year I antifouled very late (early July) with a 'thin' coat of left-over-from - last- year XM onto an 'absolutely nothing left' base . Was amased to find the hull clean last weekend. The previous year after a generous coat I'd thought the stuff rubbish. I suppose the sea conditions change year on year.

It seems to me the formulations change so quickly these days to keep up with regulations that it's really a case of pot luck. The best I've had in performance terms (though horrible to apply) came from Guernsey - reduced for quick sale!!
(we can guess why).

Sorry, havn't heard of Coopers.

Sorry, should have also mentioned that the boat sits in the mud such that the 'belly' is just above or slighltly touching the mud.

I use hard a/f on the bilge keels and for the area between them. Eroding for the rest. Rudder/Skeg gets as much as whatever is left over.

I too was on a C3 last year - at Bosham. This year I have a B3 which should be kinder to the boat.

I've seen the XM antifoul but have heard mixed reports about it (see thread on YM Scuttlebut). It seems as though the 3000 is OK but the 2000 is rubbish!

Has anyone heard of the Coopers?

I had XM 3000 on my boat last year, and when she came out of the water at the end of November, all that was on the bottom was some slime - from the mud of Falmouth harbour.

The only barnacles were on the bottom of the keels (where the soft ablative AF had probably been rubbed off when going aground on sandy bottoms) and the un-antifouled stainless steel of the prop shaft and rope cutter.

This year, for no other reason than I have a full old (legal) tin of it, I am using Awlgrip Goldstar - that I know from previous use, is also good.

regards,
Philip

I tried Coopers a few years back, can't remember whether it was any good - I bought it at the Essex Boat Jumble. I now use Flagship A/F - works fine where I moor - East Coast, River Deben, just light slime at the end of the season + a few barnacles here and there(with mid season scrub) £39.95 for 2½litres delivered. Tel 01621 785173 or look on their website www.flagfinishes.co.uk good stuff -and they do other paints as well, all delivered free if you order A/f at the same time, can't vouch for the other paints but am trying bilge and deck paint this year.
