Yes, they reduce waterflow through the tubes leading to overheating.
....and a significant reduction in flow of cooling water leads to uncooled exhaust gases in the mixer bottle - which then melts, with said exhaust gases routing into accommodation and cockpit. That's not only noisy and smelly, it's toxic.

And it can lead to a seriously-grumpy 'better half', never mind the hassle and cost of sourcing and then fitting a new Vetus mixer bottle on a Bank Holiday Weekend.

If the blades have fallen off, the flow will be reduced whether the blades are caught in a filter or not.
Because the impeller will have stopped working!

There are typically 5 or 6 blades. Ends come off a couple and there will still be enough flow to move them along. Never had it happen myself, just going on the fairly common reports of people finding bits in the inlet end caps when investigating poor waterflow. Hopefully discovered before engine seriously overheats.
