I'm talking about the cheapo 12-volt jobs you find in supermarkets. Some work great and some don't work at all. How can you tell the difference before you buy one?
Don't know, except by looks - how thick is the insulation, does it have a low volt cutout?.
I bought one a few years ago good for keeping the reserve supply of beer cold but draws 4~5amp continous. The one I bought has a split lid so only have to open ½ the lid to get the beer out and it also has a full insulated lid - no cooler - so one can carry it to the shops to get more cold beer.
I am afraid with these things the old adage applies "you only get what you pay for"

I paid £50 for a relatively large "peltier" solid state mini fridge, and turned it on its side with draw runners attached to the sides, so that it pulls out like a draw. It has worked very well for 3 years...
It does draw 4-5 amps, so we use it during the day and swtich off at night.. having said that it still keeps butter etc cool, even after 12 hours of being switched off...
Energy saving tip - drink bitter and red wine - they do not need to be kept ice cold!
got one to supplement onboard frig.use it for lager and veg.bring a couple of freezer blocks from home and put them in to give it a start.when i use engine i put them in freezer compartment of frig. and cool them down again.switch it off at night.
Try it! if it dont work return it!!
I second the other comments we use one in our camper as its small, but big enough for essentials.
Battery consumption is high though and if you allow it to continually flatten your domestic battery the battery will be ruined. (So I'm told and this seems to be the case with my own battery)
Regards
I have a large one .... with split compartments and insulation. But the current draw melted a car lighter socket !!
I only have it on during engine runs.
Make sure that you FREEZE as much as possible before putting into the box ... thats food and the ice-packs .... I freeze bread, anything that doesn't spoil if frozen ...
As to Bitter not being cold ... only when absolutely necessary - I prefer my beer chilled ... and I'm NOT a lager drinker .....
Red Wine ... now there's a funny story about 3 ltrs in Yarmouth Isle of Wight there !!!! Isn't there Jim ...............
Had two peltier cooled boxes, each one a bit bigger. The second £40 one used 4 amps for 100% of the time and flattened the battery, making the inside of the box a bit cooler. If the airflow got obstructed it made the inside of the box a bit warmer..
I then bought a small secondhand EuroEngel Danfoss compressor based portable coolbox and this uses 4 amps but only for 20-25% of the time on the thermostat, and it keeps the inside at a much lower temperature. The difference is that the model in question was last seen retailing 'new' for £150 at Beaulieu. It is a lot heavier and more bulky than the peltier boxes.
My example with a dodgy power switch was £40 sold-as-seen at Beaulieu.
On the very same day the peltier based box in the car had flattened the battery resulting in an AA callout after 6 hours of use.
