Used to run a Jap Import 4x4 on Tesco vege oil straight from the shop. Got some funny looks at the checkout when buying a trolley full. And in the carpark when pouring it directly into the tank!

It ran fine on more veg oil than 50:50 with diesel but we did smell like a mobile chip shop.

Was ~25p a litre for the veg oil when we first started to do it.

As far as I can make out plenty of people run diesel vehicles on a veggie oil mixture especially when there are special offers on at the supermarkets. One new ploy I have heard recently is LPG injection for diesels which apparently reduces the net running cost for the vehicle. Costs under £1000 for a 2.5

I remember being in Aldi waiting at the checkout and the woman in front had a trolley full of cooking oil. The checkout operator asked her why all the oil and she quite happily explained it was for her husband's van.

Petroleum producer...

Hi All

I used to be a biodiesel manufacturer. Registered with Customs & Excise in Southend as it was at the time.

Paid 26p duty/ltr.

Sounds grand but all this took place in my domestic garage.

Why do people sneer at cars smelling like chips? I'd rather smell a bag of chips than a bus exhaust personally....

I can tell all about titrations.. ph.. bubble washing.. sodium hydroxide, methanol and glycerine.. (if anyone interested!)

Straight veg oil better for most uses.

Reason for registering and declaring? Partner at time said she wouldn't get in the car otherwise as she a warranted Customs Officer.....

My BIL runs the family car and a large van on used chip fat he gets from a local restaurant. I don't know much about it, but he has to process it somehow first. He runs the central heating in a large house all the year round on waste wood.

Thought I read somewhere that the Excise allowed 2.500lts /yr of recycled oil veg before they were interested? Or was I dreaming?

There was a huge hoohaa a couple of years ago, as home brewed biodiesel was allowed in this way, but refined waste cooking oil was still a proscribed fuel. Look on ebay for heat exchangers and heated filter manifolds.

Used to get used transformer oils HMCR do a simple SG to determine the legality of any proscribed fuel (All legal fuels fall within a narrow band of SG)

Using transformer oil can be dodgy especially if its out of old transformers as some had Pyrochlor in, which is bloody lethal.Think they,ve banned it now.

my camper runs fine on a 50/50 mix

I have heard of someone who allegedly runs his vehicle on 'spare' aviation fuel....

Ouch-thats keroscene/paraffin/esso blue whatever you want to call it-scoured engine;no injector pump;dead injectors -unless you add a dose of oil(preferably gear oil)for lubrication.
Friend of mine uses it in his cleaning tank-seemingly a little RAF illegal money spinner-dont ask.

Old chip pan fat runs no problem filtered in a blend with heating oil/keroscene in my oil fired central heating. Was going to collect free of charge from local hotels(others charge)
My house now runs on free wood but does take about an hour a day cutting enough to burn.
Never forget the concept behind Diesels engine was to run on peanut oil and was seen as a means of providing a power source in the third world.
My merc OM 636 will run on most things-my origional workshop manual lists reccomendations including soya oil, palm oil etc.
