Converting a 240v fridge to 12v?

As I said, the boat (which isn't mine) is currently set up using a 1kw inverter to run the fridge.

I keep telling people to read the thread before bursting into print, some just don't learn

Assuming it has one, how about using the inverter's on/off switch as the thermostatic switching point? That would avoid all the high current issues with interrupting the supply.
