I have just been told that the prices charged for working on boats within the marina by independent contractors are now fixed by the marina. Is this so? First I've heard of it but then I've only been an annual berth holder there for ten years! Don't laws exist in Greece to prevent anti-competitive practices like this?

Certainly there are EC laws against collusion and anti-competitive practices, but I doubt, from what you've printed that these are in breach of the directives or that you'd be prepared to take advantage of the directive.

I now have more information.

The marina has a list of "Approved Contractors" who are the only ones allowed to work on boats in the marina. To be on this list, contractors have to register with the marina and show that they have insurance which indemnifies the marina against claim or loss. When a contractor wishes to work on a boat in the marina he has to obtain a "worksheet" from the marina office and pay the marina a royalty of 20% of the contract price plus 23%VAT. That situation has pertained for some time now. However, recently, the marina has introduced a list of "Standard Charges" detailing costs per metre for the various tasks, polishing preparing, bottom painting etc which must be used and anyone putting in lower figure will be sent back to the customer to revise the quote upwards. There is a bloke running around on his scooter looking for workers doing jobs on boats and asking them to produce their worksheets.

Greece, it appears to me, just doesn't get the concept of Healthy Competition. What price this absurd EU?

This happens in a lot of marinas in Greece ie messilongh , kos , I have heard people say , there nothing wrong if it and why shouldn't the marina get it cut , I can give you one good reason , YOUR paying the extra 20% . We lucky there not much I can't do my self . The only problem I have had is once being stop helping another yachtsman with a problem even tho I was doing it for free .

When I was in Gouvia I heard a story about someone having an engine replaced. Engine subsequently went bang and the owner pursued both the contractor and Med Marinas as they have been involved to the tune of 20%. Gouvia basically laughed him out of the office. So it is simply a back hander tax as far as they are concerned. You are literally getting nothing for your 20%.

Can you suggest a contacator ?

[Hi, My Moody 471 has been on the Hard all winter, I've mailed Gouvia for a list of contarctors, still awaiting a reply ! Can anyone suggest someone they have used. I need the bottom sanded ready for anti fouling, also can anyone suggest somewhere where I can take my two portable stainless fuel tanks to be steam cleaned before I fill them.

Thanks in adavance.
