Container vessel abandoned mid atlantic.

David (or others),

I will sail from the Azores towards south brittany in about one week, weather permitting, have you or are there any updates as to the approximate position/area of the lost containers ?
Even a very rough estimate would help

regards
roberto

Hello again Roberto :)

The first shout was mid Atlantic 14 JUL 1007 UTC and the crew had been fire-fighting before this time so this is the first location:

48° 13.000'N 27° 56.000'W

Their current location is 26 Jul 2012:

48° 10.229'N 10° 27.840'W

which is just west of 10° West so containers can be anywhere between these locations and then there is drift due to wind and tide. Current will take them ENE at about ½ knot but wind is from the NE at 15knots.

I would suspect that most of the containers are towards the NW of Horta, the major loss being early one in the incident (14 July) but you might encounter one or two, so good watch-keeping will be essential? :(

If they have been buckled by the intense heat, they hopefully would have lost any water-tight integrity that they once had and are now sunk?

Safe passage to you :)

If you have it, PM me your 8816 number ;)

I have an +87077 number (Inmarsat) but after a splash from a wave the telephone display has gone black so I cannot read anything, messages included, so much for the IPxx "splash resistance" of the handset

otherwise, email to callsign@winlink.org which I can access by radio/satphone,
replace "callsign" with M0ITA (second digit is a zero), as you know just messages in text form, and put "//WL2K R/" (without commas) in the subject line to avoid the spam filter; or better send me a PM with your email address and I will add it to my Winlink Whitelist so it will always be accepted

thanks again

No it's not NIMBYISM rather a growing dislike of us being continually 'taken a len off' by others for their own financial gain which is just why many other nations are far more robust with potentially dangerous shipping trying to enter their waters. The fire is under control according to reports so she doesn't need shelter to achieve that.

Its not just us, we are not the only country that gets visitors in distress...
Questions like this will cost lives if not the crew, it will innocent people on beaches...

Its not a Nimbyism its a selfish attitude and it will bight back.

I have no problem with her being brught into the UK to be fixed, but I do object if she is brought in for free parking whilst the deal to fix her is arranged elsewhere. That puts the UK at great risk for no return. One hopes the owners are being very frank with the authorities about what was in her cargo that couls have caused the explosion and fire.

Its all about money, I agree then if the UK could repair the ship in a cost effective manner but sadly no. It will be cheaper to tow her half way round the the world to another country...

No it's no selfish at all, free parking puts our shore and population at risk, and I suspect our ship repair is pretty competitive on the world scale, mind you if there is suspicion about dodgy cargo as suggested elsewhere then we may not be so competitive.

Our ship repair facilities seem to be able to hold their own in the market so perhaps we should not suggest they are also rans.

It seems to me they have two objectives, one is to unload the cargo somewhere. The second is to get the ship repaired. Where in Great Britain could a ship this size be repaired?

Who wants to buy 20 x 40foot containers of cooked Brazil Nuts then? Who's gonna make an offer?

Apparently there price, these coming weeks, is going to be higher. :(
