Considering new Princess V42

I've clocked up 1200+ hrs on various outdrive boats over 10years.
The drives have never prevented me from going boating.

Over that time, I've had one unscheduled lift, and a couple of milkshake in oil issues caused by fishing line or net debris which were fixed at the end of the season.

Other than the above, it's just a matter of changing gaiters, anodes and oil.

We've looked at both the V42 & V45 in some detail and there's defiantly more room on a V45, especially in the saloon and mid cabin. Given current stock boat prices I'd probably plump for the V45 given the choice of the 2. However I do also share the concerns of sterndrives on a boat of that size. Both great boths though, however we eneding up going for the Targa 44.

Princess

Been away and missed this very interesting thread..as am considering similar issues

My 10p worth as follows

Princess is my favourite - have had 2 and loved em both
Had Sports V39 and fly P45 - I like the sports but only with a hard top as I have a major issue with canvas and studs...
I would go with outdrives..the p45 with shafts had shocking (to me) fuel consumption and spent hours worrying about dripping gland thingys and damaging V expensive props..
Outdrives also good for rivers without concern of touching bottom - Never had a problem with them - but like you concerned to hear about others experiences

JTB, I too am confused by current princess models. For me the V39 has more entertaining space than the V42 or V45. Personally, I dont want a flipping great big sun pad in the middle of the cockpit!
So BIZARRE as it sounds, I want to buy a V45HT with outdrives but I dont like them!

To get the sort of space I want, i would have to go to the V52 which is way out of my price range.
Now comes the scary bit...
I briefly went over to to the dark side and started trawling the internet for "Other" brands.
I was amazed to find that the Sealine SC42 has everything that I want..the cockpit is out of this world, the interior layout is spot on....the space and light inside is amazing....However, I went to see one and sadly, not wishing to be rude to Sealine but just not the same feel as Princess. Nothing wrong with that but just not for me...

So where does that leave me..frankly waiting for Princess to buid a boat that i like..have great hopes for something in the 45-50 size with a cockpit designed for living. Praps father christmas will bring me something ;-)

Hi are you the same Martin who has just sold bathing beauty ?

fuel consumption on a 42 foot motor yacht

Hi All,
This is my first reply on this forum.
I have a Sessa 42HT motoboat for the last 5 years and the fuel consumption is as followes:

At 25 kts it uses about 86 L per hour for BOTH engines( ie 43L each).
at 32 kts uses 110L for both eng.
The overall average over a year comes to about 50L for both engines.

the engines are Volvo D6 330hp each, boat weighs about 9Tonnes loaded.

Hope this helps.
Also I would recommend to go for the 45 foot boat(more stable and roomier).
Regards
capt peter

Thank you rafiki. I did read on several forums that the VP sterndrives are indeed very prone to be caught in stray fishing lines. Is that a sealing issue?
I didn't realise that the steering rams on the Mercs are in the engine bay, as I believe they are hanging out in the water on the VPs.

What made you opt for the Targa44 Illusion? Is that an IPS or sterndrive set-up?
There is indeed more headroom in the V45: approximately 3" in the saloon and about 2" in the mid cabin. Heads and master cabin are similar.

Martin, are you referring to the cockpit in terms of entertainment space? Although both the V42 and V45 have the sunpad aft, the seating area is not smaller than on the V39 in my opinion. I only saw pictures though of the V39, and only went on the V42/45.

Others may have a bit more detail, but I believe the Merc drives have better sealing at the prop interface. The VP steering rams are raised on here regularly. There is a service fix to shroud the piston rod with a gaiter, and this has had varying success.

The V39 doesn't have the garage or associated sunpad, which gives more room aft to the cockpit.

But if you want a V45, but without outdrives, then you probably want to wait for the new V47 which won't be an outdrive boat.

Yes, the space in the V39 cockpit is open because there is no sunpad/garage (as per JTB post), if you look at the V52 it also has a lot of open space as well. For me, I would loose the garage in a heart beat for more deck space. My only criticism of my old V39 (which has the same layout as the current V42) was the layout of the cockpit. If you look at the layout diagrams earlier in this thread you will see what I mean. Basically to get from the transom to the cabin you have to walk this "S" shape line that is really only wide enough for one person at a time. This makes entertaining a few friends a very "everybody just sit down and don't move" affair. Its not specific to Princesses, most sports boats have this S line passage (except a few).

I remember sitting in the P45 cockpit last summer (which has a big open area) while moored next to a chap (on a V45) who was trying to have a few friends over for sundowners. It struck me then that for a sports boat of that size (even with the cockpit table removed) there is almost nowhere to stand and chat without being in the way. Everyone was either constantly moving awkwardly around the place or jammed into a seat that they couldnt get out of without disturbing someone else. So thats what i mean about the V39 having more space.

Another point to note is that down inside the cockpit the V42 vs V39 doesnt feel much different to me. The V45 does feel bigger inside as long as you dont go for the three cabin option. On that point we did have a 3 cabin P45 but in the third cabin the bunks were soooo small that even my daughter refused to sleep in it and preferred the sofa. I tried it once but my feet touched the end wall on both bunks, same for my 16 year old son!!.

So our next boat will be two cabins with space at the ends of the beds for lanky peoples feet to overhang and an open cockpit layout that allows us to move around freely even if we have a few friends on board.

dang

V47 ?? My prayers have been answered ;-)
But ....Noooo i want the outdrives...:-( who do i need to speak to!!
And what news of sunpads?

I didn't know you could specify the V45 with 3 cabins. I knew you can on a V52, but had no idea about the V45. But then the only saloon you have is in the cockpit, so it becomes a boat that is only usable in the summer. It must feel claustrophobic inside with 3 cabins.

A V47????? Will that be the big surprise at the SBS?

I was at swanwick today, looking at a v42 out of the water, one thing that sprung to mind was the hi low platform, how would it alter the trim and sea keeping with a heavy jetrib on it as the drives are forward of the platform ? Where normally shafts and props would be just forward of this, along with all the weight already aft with the engines.

As the latest generation boats have now progressed to saving the space of the sunpad/ dinghy garage below design, in favour of the hi low platforms, at what expense does this alter the trim angle, ride and overall feel of the boat .

I've never sea trailed either the v42 or v45 but I'm told by an owner of a 45 that's it's very high bow trim compared to his previous windy.

Sorry just another spanner maybe in your works of choosing which boat to buy!

I didn't know you could specify the V45 with 3 cabins

You can't.

A V47????? Will that be the big surprise at the SBS?

It'll be announced, but there won't be a physical boat to look at until next year. PS it's only me that's calling it the V47, they haven't actually released the name of it yet, they probably won't do that until the official announcement.

Aha sorry I misunderstood your previous post. If you want a Princess with outdrives, it's the V39 or the V42 only, and from Fairline I think it's the T38 only plus the last of the T44's (until the T45 turns up). If you're after a big cockpit, out of all of those it's probably the T44, isn't it?

Cheers

correct on all points

My mistake I thought the V45 had a 3 cabin option like the P45 did..but it doesnt..:-)

I did say that "most sports" boats have the "S line" access to the cabin..but your right the GT44 has the open cockpit layout that I want. Hopefully the "new" princess will have it too.

That just leaves the outdrives...I know they dont do them on the V45 and people say that they anything above a 45ft is too heavy..and point taken about the hi lo BPlat and wieght distribution etc... I was just saying that I dont really want another shaft drive boat...after the last one and i dont really want to try IPS. Cant see an answer to that one so will probably end up with shafts that i dont want ...hey ho.

TBH if you want an open cockpit, stern drives, and two cabins I would go blind folded for the 44 Targa GT. Faboulous boat, and very little bow high. IMO the 44 Targa GT rides also better to the Princess V42 or 45 and is a dryer boat.
The Princess has just got sweeter cleaner lines....
