Today in Southampton water a rather large mobo was crossing close ahead of my small sail boat. It looked like she would cross direct ahead, a lot closer than I would have liked and at a decent rate of knots, leaving a wake that while not dangerous, it could have been very uncomfortable,

The mobo didn't have too many choices because ahead of me was another sailing boat. Go closer inshore to round them and they might have run out of water, go behind me and it would put them into the shipping channel where there was commercial traffic. Low visability, so we all wanted to be in shallower water.

I was close hauled and my only option would have been to bear away, to port and stand into a more dangererous position.

So what did they do, actually a very decent thing, altered course to be directly between the 2 yachts, a decent but still quite close way ahead, then took off all speed so there was virtually no wake. After they were clear and they had watched us pass the little wake there was, they sped up again.

Low visability, edge of Weston shelf so not a lot of sea room. Really well executed. Thank you.

I wonder if it was the one we saw - very large, blue hulled machine, going some 20+ knots. The wake was massive - much more than your average mobo - I altered heading to meet it head on, but the waves were pretty big. Quite entertaining! The video camera was in the cabin with no time to retrieve it - Dylan would have loved it!

No, that's not the one. We did see that one as well about half an hour after. "Resolution," or similar I think. Not quite as well handled as the guys I'm talking about. In fact they left me wondering if they has seen us for quite a while. But all ended well with no dramas.

If you saw them, you cannot have been far away, did you overtske an old wooden boat per chance?

The boat in question was a large white, slightly older style mobo. Unfortunately, I didn't get the boat name, or I would have posted. Credit, where it's due and all that.

Sorry, the following doesn't relate at all to motorboats. :o

Phill, by an amazing chance I happened to be on the dock overlooking Weston Shelf today. I had my hands full, but I did notice a very pretty wooden boat approaching under sail.

Without thinking very long or hard, it did occur to me momentarily that she must be something like the wooden boat belonging to that chap on the forum who, about a month back, I recommended should line his boat with insulation and get a decent heating system. I was sorry then, to find that he wasn't very grateful for my suggestion.

But having admired her very much today, I can see why he prefers her exactly as she is! :encouragement: Small world, isn't it.

Thank you Dan, that is very kind. Kind too for you not to mention our various " moments" getting the sails up and down. Early season, and all that ;)

I happen to work just outside the docks. If you are around and fancy a coffe , drop me a pm.

That's a kind offer Phill, though I really don't know when I'll be over that way again.

But it was wonderful to see such a classy boat in action. I certainly didn't notice any hitches with your sail-handling!

Whoa!! For the avoidance of doubt this Resolution is a sailboat that very seldom goes fast enough to create a big wake, and anyway we are now based in Turkey!!

On the other hand well done PhilM for taking the time to appreciate a considerate mobo skipper.

Sorry Phil, didn't see the old wooden boat - normally I do look at such beauties, but missed it on this occasion.

It is always nice to see one's efforts in avoiding wake for others, getting rewarded with a friendly wave or even a post on here. Makes it worth doing... ☺

Thank you, I do believe we waved, and yes, much credit where credit is due. thank you. It really was apriciated.

Like to add my thanks to you for taking the trouble to report. It makes for courteous boating all round.

I remember when I was tanking down Southampton Water in my Ranger 36 & saw a very pretty Hunter Liberty ahead, crossing from Ashlett. I cut off the speed to displacement & made a wide sweep round his stern. Nothing special as manoeuvers go, but as we passed, the skipper solemnly raised his hat in thanks. Needless to say, I have been extra considerate since then.

Have to say I have been very impressed with the courtesy of many MOBOers on the Hamble over the last couple of weeks. Last week I had someone up the mast and the number of MOBOers who noticed and slowed down as the passed so as to minimise wake was impressive. The worst offender was a charter yacht that I think was keeping to a 6knot SOG against the tide and was dragging a mountain behind her.

Even yesterday when just pottering on deck and stripping plastic from guardrails a number slowed down.

Didn't see any mouse burgees but if it was you passing G33 thank you!!
