I am getting quite exasperated with trying to connect my Silva S15 radio to my Lowrance Globalmap 5000c so that the position of the boat shows on the radio and therefore if the time ever came to send a distress message I would be able to just press and hold the little red button and my position would be transmitted along with the call.

The problem I am having is that the radio has a tail for connection with a red (gps +) and a black (gps gnd), the tail from the Lowrance Data/Power cable has a label on it (RS-232 COMM) and has 4 wires (blue, yellow, orange and a bare wire which I am assuming is ground) the handbook shows two different configurations for transmitting NMEA position information to another NMEA compatible device.
1. Yellow(transmit) to NMEA receive and Shield(ground) to ground
2. Blue(transmit) to NMEA receive and Shield(ground) to Ground

I have tried as many configurations as I can think of but to no avail.

I am sure that out there is someone who can explain what I am doing wrong and hopefully point me in the right direction.

Bob

Bob i'm having a similar problem at the moment with linking my Icom vhf to my Ray plotter. I cannot comment on your setup. But over the last few weeks i have learnt that to receive a position in your vhf via NMEA both GPS and VHF need to be running the same version of NMEA software or to be compatible and running at the correct baud rate (poss 4800bps)

At present i'm running version 2.0 in my vhf and 2.3 in my plotter.

Can i suggest you get in contact with your GPS / VHF manufacture for help, I found Raymarine very helpful for my problem. Or do a search on this site there has been lots of talk about NMEA and Silva S15 lately. Obviously the time of year for fitting new toys !!

Best of luck.
