I have a Navman DSC VHF and a Navman GPS. I believe that in order to get the DSC finction to work i need to connect the two units with a cable.

can anyone tell me what the cable is called and where i can buy one from?

cheers

Not sure about Navman but I can tell you about Furuno I imagine it will be similar. The DSC radio needs to receive NMEA data from the GPS this outputs on 2 wires a +5v and a ground/earth these need to be connected to the NMEA input of the DSC. On my GPS there is one cable going into it, 2 wires within the cable are for power the others are outputs for NMEA If they are not connected already they will be at the end of the cable from the GPS but not connected to anything. Similarly the cable from the DSC will have a couple of wires not connected either. You will need to find out the colour codes and connect the wires together. This info should be in the handbooks.

Once connected with Philip's helpful diagram, you may need to set the GPS to output NMEA. My Navman plotter didn't default to send the signal. Easy to configure (if you have the instructions that is!)

You need to be registered to get a MMSI number which identifies your boat, but I take it you know this, otherwise your boat remains unidentified and nameless.

The wiring on the VHFNavman7000/7100/7200 is, from the manual:-
Pin 1 red- not used (no connection)
Pin 2 Orange NMEA OUT(+) (not used)
Pin 3 White Program or clone select(not used)
Pin 4 Yellow NMEA IN(+) (from GPS)
Pin 5 Green NMEA IN(-) (from GPS)
Pin 6 Black NMEA OUT (-) (Ground, not used)
Pin 7 Blue + NAVBUS (not used on 7000 or 7100)
Pin 8 Grey - NAVBUS (not used on 7000 or 7100)

Connecting the radio :-

There are three sockets on the back of the radio,a combined ower and speaker socket and the GPS socket have short connectors already in place, but further electrical wiring is required at the rear of the radio.

GPS connector. Line up the arrow on the connector with the arrow on the GPS cable supplied and then plug together, the GPS plug has the eight pins as shown above.

You have to obtain an MMSID before you can use the DSC function in your 7100 or 7200.

To enter the MMSID number(a once only function):
Press and hold CALL/MENU to display the menu

Press+CH or rotate the knob to select DSC setup, then press ENT
Press ENT to select USER MMSID. A dashed line will appear.
Enter your user MMSID along the dashed line using an alphanumeric microphone or the
+CH -key.
Press ENTER to confirm each correct entry. If you make an error, press - until the < is displayed, then pressENT to store it.
When the MMSID has been entered correctly press ENT to store it.
You must enter the MMSID again as a password check, then press ENT to store it permanently.

You can view your stored MMSID any time in the DSC SETUP screen.

It just so happens I was reading both manuals this weekend and had them handy!

If you are fitting an extension speaker there are some more instructions for that in the manual too.

Once you have connected up you will have to make sure the baud rate is correct. I had a posting recently on this. It was 4800 for Lowrance to iCom but may be different for your combination.

on the back of my navman gps is a socket that matched the socket on the vhf, i was just hoping to get a cable with the right connectors on each end to make life simple.

but i guess life isn't that simple.

maybe this helps ?

I got the VHF connect as described above, but the + and - cables on the VHF were the wrong way round.

Took me ages to work it out.

Which is immaterial as the radio by design is not supposed to function with regards to the wee red button till the MMSI is entered.
