What is the difference between flocoat and gelcoat? It seems to me that these terms are considered interchangeable by some authors, is this right? Thanks.
Well, for me gelcoat is the product that contains the inhibitor so that the surface exposed to air does not cure, aiding adhesion of the subsequent resin/glass mix. It's the stuff that is painted onto the mould initially.
Flocoat is gelcoat with additional wax added so that the surface cures fully and does not remain sticky. Its use is to paint over the exterior of the laid up GRP to provide a more attractive appearance, and to cover any small protruding fibres.
Caution, you are looking at a Safety Data Sheet. This has little to do with the application.
When you purchase Gelcoat the product has no added wax so will not cure unless all air is prevented from reaching the surface, normal practice is to cover the area with plastic for repair work on the exterior; or, cover it with fibreglass and resin when inside a mold.
When purchased as Flowcaot the wax has been added and it will cure exposed to the air; truth is the wax makes it's way to the surface and prevents air getting to the resin, thus no need for plastic cover sheet.
Both have pigment added to provide the required colour.
