Conflicting Information...

I see John (OP) has switched on his AIS this morning which has pulled the tracking on both Marine Traffic & Vesselfinder back to Suffolk.
I have and seems ok although maybe some confusion with call sign still.
I have taken the liberty of adding to the thread on the Rib forum so will see if any further information comes back. Thanks for all help.

The combination of threads #22 to #24 do indeed suggest to me that somehow the owner of the boat in the Caribbean may have bought the OP’s old device and not changed the MMSI.
If this is the case, the location may flip / flop depending on who switched on most recently.

And their spelling of "Hjghland" may also point to lack of skill in programming an AIS.

I'd argue the OP has a case with the installer since the old AIS should not have been sold with his MMSI still programmed. In the US, there are several more fields in the AIS data that cannot be reprogrammed by the end user.

Thank you all for your help - much appreciated; the power of this forum is great!
I contacted David, the owner of Highland Fling, and he confirmed he had recently purchased what appears to be my old AIS - he had this reprogrammed last week and is currently at anchor in the Caribbean. I am hoping now that our individual details continue to work independently as they should - currently vessel finder seems correct but I guess we won't know for sure until both of us move around!
FYI the UK dealer still maintains the unit was wiped but hasn't confirmed where or who it was sold to.

I could pretty well say with certainty it wasn't wiped. The new buyer would have seen the factory set up screen and warnings that the set won't work properly until an MMSI number is programmed. The chances of them then programming your MMSI number in again would be impossible unless there was a home made sticker on the box that said "MMSI = 235084352" or similar that misled them?

It has been confirmed to be the same unit and it seems that clearing the MMSI wasn't succesfull, all's well that ends well and all that(y)

That should read "clearing the MMSI wasn't done". If one has the software to do this it's a simple job and a message is given to say it was done successfully, or not.

I agree that it almost certainly wasn't done. However, it's done now, the OP has made a new acquaintance and the forum has proved to be a useful resource. It's a good news story let's not spin it too far. There's plenty of bad news around.

I'm not sure that you can believe anything given by AIS. Try looking for HMS Queen Elizabeth- AIS says she's in Liverpool which seems a bit odd when I look out of the window and she's still in Rosyth dockyard!

Are you looking at live AIS via VHF - or a website, which will show the last available location, which may be many months ago if not been switched on.

Using warships as an example is hardly representative - as clearly they have an exemption and in current climate are hardly likely to switch on AIS routinely.

This is exactly right. AIS from an AIS receiver is real time and reliable. AIS from an app can be contaminated in various ways, and be significantly delayed. Basically, AIS apps are fun and potentially useful for tracking vessels by persons ashore, but they are NOT useful for navigation.
