You sound very qualified and able, but I dont mean you should now stop learning, you should never do that. When you think you know it all then you become an arrogant menace, (remember the 40ft (race?) boat on the weekend?).

If I may be so bold, a tip for judging whether you are going in front or behind another yacht on crossing tacks. It works anywhere where there is scenery behind the opposition - i.e. the Solent.

Watch its forestay. If land is coming out from behind it, you are going in front. If land is disappearing behind it, it is going in front. If the land behind isn't growing or going, then you are on a collision course. If at this point, you are stand on yacht, holler "Starboard" very loudly, and watch the b*gger to make sure he alters.

PS - one look is not enough - keep an eye on an approaching yacht because a lift or a header can change the situation very quickly.
 
True statement - everyone has to start somewhere, but I would expect a beginner to be cautious and not foolhardy, moreover I am really suprised that Fairview do not appear to keep better tabs on their yachts. We are moored on the Hamble and in fairness I think this was exceptionally bad, but it does reinforce my caution about keeping them at a distance. Close enough for a chuckle but far enough away to prevent damage. But this incidence was the worst I have seen so far and just from the point of view of potential damage to the yacht it was cringe making...

I confess I would never 'rent' my yacht out - it is too precious to me and too many hours have been spent in getting her up to shape. I truly sympathise with Al_Jones. It must be very upsetting to see bits broken by inconsiderate people. Hey ho, I guess it goes with the territory that you occaisionaly get a bad group...

But you could send them a letter complaining about their conduct on the charter and charge £30 for the letter, then next time they book add an arrangement fee cross sold with a mandatory insurance policy, then when they arrive say their boat has just been securitized but provide them with a CDO (charters deferred option). I am sure they will understand.
