Nice website you have there, but IMHO you should put a little more tension on your Genoa halyard and kicking strap.

Re: ConchPearls\' rigging

Thanks for the advice - only been sailing since the end of last summer so I do appreciate any advice/criticism.

Unfortunately, the kicking strap had to be removed that day as I had to reef the main a bit - and she still has roller reefing around the boom.

That Pic (and a few others on the site) were taken by forumite Graham a few weeks ago on route to Portishead.

Re: ConchPearls\' rigging

Yes, I have heard of those, but I have been looking into the possibility of puuting 'slab' reef points in the main, which is in decent enough shape. I have also been looking into a roller reefing genoa system.

As I sail mainly alone, trips to the foredeck can be a bit scary at times.

Any advice on systems/suppliers would be welcome.

Re: ConchPearls\' rigging

How often are you going to reef? I'd spend the money on furling gear for the genoa. Someone posted an ad they'd seen in which some was being given away to anyone who'd collect it. Usually costs a bit more than that though.

Re: ConchPearls\' rigging

I sail mainly in the Bristol Channel and the wind can be very variable in parts - as an example, on a recent trip to Portishead, I reefed & unreefed the main, as well as change foresails 4 times in a 3 hour period.

Where was that ad posted? I am currently not working, so anything for free is a massive bonus!

LakeSailor - thanks for the email, I just called the Wardens Office but just got an answerphone message. I shall try again in the morning.

Many Thanks

Re: ConchPearls\' rigging

A Kicking Strap is the pully system that runs from the base of the aft face of mast at the deck to the boom.

The purpose of it is to pull down the boom thus altering the curvature of the leach of the mainsail.
On the photo of Conch Pearl the leach has too much curvature which is what one would expect if, as the owner stated, the kicker had been removed to reef because of his boom roller reefing.

In those circumstances if a reefing claw has not been fitted it is possible to roll a strop or even a sailbag inside the main when reefing.
This then will give a suitable reefing point on the boom.

Thank you.
'Vang'. What a cool word. Almost as impressive as 'pith'.
