I've just got the missus a new lappy which means her old one is now "boat equipment". Here's the rub though. It's running unix.

Now I could cave in to the great satan and load up XP, but it's a netbook with limited power that runs just fine under unix but will run like a dog if I load it up with windows. So...

Assuming I stick with unix, email is currently thunderbird, browser is firefox, chat is pigeon, what software can I get for..

tidal calcs
passage planning
weather forecast reception
etc...

I also need to find a usb gsm modem that works with unix.

Any clues anyone?

How about running a copy of XP as a "virtual machine", then just get the readily available apps for that? I'm not a unix/linux person myself, but I know people who run an XP virtual machine on Linux for other apps that just aren't available for Linux.
