not sure that vodka or gin Ideal as it will take the numbers off the painted bits how about baby oil or similar?

Some compass manufacturers use synthetic paraffin. Suggest you check with fluid suppliers such as Esso(Exxon)

I have some fluid that I salvaged from a contest 101. You can have some for the postage.

i used baby oil to fill up my plastimo and it worked well. i tried out different fluids to se which mixed with the original. both turps and baby oil mixed fine. you can 1/2 litre of the original fluid thro the post for £20 from compass repairers
