I have a Yasesu FRG-100 receiver, which was on Shady when I got her & I have only just got around to playing with it. Having never used this type of kit before can anyone help with the following questions:

a/ is there a good book/web site, that I can get that explains comms in very simple terms

b/ Is there a list somewhere on the web of usefull frequencies that I can use for say weather news etc.

c/ Where do I take an external ariel to? is the backstay ok?

Thanks

poter.

I have the same receiver, I should warn you it is not really meant for marine installation. Does it have a 'cleaned' power supply ? However, it is good for weather fax and navtex via a laptop, and weather from several stations in Europe and the Med. Also great for listening in to yachties in far flung places enjoying more interesting sailing than you are!

Loads of good advice on frequencies, usage and installation on www.icomamerica.com (go to downloads), but since you are not transmitting you don't need to worry so much about grounding - just ground to eg a seacock is good enough. Backstay would make a good aerial if it is insulated top and bottom.

Frequencies for weather in Reeds or on the web. Maritime net freqs on the web eg http://www.marineradio.co.uk/freqs1.html - but lots of better ones if you google a bit.

There is a radio section on the cruising website (see link below), it contains many links for information as well as frequencies etc for cruising yachts worldwide

You can find all this at

Have you visited the Blue Water Cruising Site <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.onpassage.com>http://www.onpassage.com ?
