Our broker has suggested that if we refer customers to him that end up buying yachts, then he will happily pay us commission.
I have no idea how much that will be , but I know that he takes 8 to 10% from the sellers at completion.

How much do you think is reasonable to ask?

Thanks

Assuming this is a regular source of business for him, you would think he would have a standard offer. The fact that you have no idea what it is, and are wondering what to ask, suggests that this is one of those throw away comments where you point some business at him, then get paid little, or nothing.

Ask him how much he pays, and how you make the deal contractual when you introduce someone.

I have been involved a few times but never so far to my benefit, if I know someone looking for a boat I feel that I want to help him find the best example he can regardless of brokers interests and when I know someone trying to sell and think I know someone who would appreciate the boat I am happy to tell all I can, this means giving an opinion warts and all, not what I could do if I was in cahoots with a broker.
Steve Yates has been trying to get to Essex in winter in a bargain boat I recommended to him, I am in trepidation every time he has a setback and I do not know how I might feel if I had looked for some sort of a cut on the deal, instead I have the pleasure of regarding both vendor and purchaser as friends
But if your interest is purely commercial just ask what your cut is going to be, the buyer will be paying it.

You might have to be mindful of conflicts of interest here so far as your relationship with the introduced party is concerned. If you are up to receive a commission you should disclose this to whoever you are introducing surely ? Would you wish to do this ? I can see if you are asked about a pariclar vessel by the introduced person and stand to receive large commission if he buys this might be seen by some to prejudice your independence . A broker acts for the seller but in this scenario who are you acting for?

It depends on the amount of work you have do to find potential buyers to refer, it also depends how much work you do to convince them that a boat at that particular broker is worth looking at. If you do a lot to find or attract referrals and convince them to go to your Broker and buy a boat, then I would say 8 to 10%.
