There is not, the colregs just state (translation from Dutch) 'must be shown forward, where it can best be seen'.
Here in Belgium, where police are pretty strict as to its use, most yachts show theirs just under the starboard crosstree.

Re: Special conditions: teak

I think you'll find that Appendix 978(b) states "...at any height in the forward part of the vessel PROVIDED that a teak deck is also worn AND aforementioned teak to be in a state of supreme cleanliness such as would be likely to arouse envy amongst others esp. without teak deck or with non-clean teak deck..."

Does this apply, i wonder?

Surely that does not strictly comply with the spirit of "in the forward part of the vessel" does it?

As a mere MoBo driver I must assume from experience around the Solent that there is a Local Notice to the effect that it must always be flown from WITHIN a locker!

To err is human, to really screw up you need a boat

This cannot be a proper colregs question because it's been posted over an hour and the replies are still in single figures.

Strictly speaking it does not, certainly not when you're sailing with both sails hoisted and your engine standby, which is often the case when entering the long harbour canal. But if it satisfies the men of the law, it's allright with me. The Dutch and the French hardly ever use a cone, and as far as I am aware, they do not have many more collisions?

I think you will find that a CQR (such as in the picture) pointing downwards in it's roller will suffice just fine.

MMM.... Know what you mean, how can anyone be critical if they don't follow the Colregs themselves?

I have said before in other posts, how it rattles me to change course to a stand on vessel only to find they are under power!

A sailing boat with mechanical propulsion is a power boat. Wherever the cone is, lets see it.

No thats not a local rule. That rule applies whenever we are in sight of a stinkie!

In any case, its a fair assumption in the Solent that most sailing boats are in fact motoring. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif Solent rig and all that.

Interestingly, the comment of my YM examiner to my crew when I put the cone up as we returned to port was "he's not put that damned thing up again, has he?"

this post is a personal opinion, and you should not base your actions on it.

DId a lot of motor-sailing this Summer with a full genoa flying (sometimes with, sometimes without main). Where should a cone be flown from then? I personally couldn't be ar..d tacking the cone every time I had to go about . .

Re: Colrags Question

I make a point of flying it if motoring back into Chichester harbour, so that I can have the moral high ground and have a good old rant on SB the following Monday about inconsiderate Stinkies. Unfortunately, it was clearly visible last Monday, until I tacked when it was visible over an angle of about 7.3 degrees. But as this was the "best visibility" available from the starboard shroud, on starboard tack, it was within the regs. IMO, if a yacht has a bow-wave in a F2 or less, then it doesn't take a genius to see if she's motoring or not. And when it comes to giving way, right of way is of secondary importance when leaving Chichester harbour, as less than half the boats seem to have any ideas what they're doing, let alone what you might be doing or what the colregs are...

P.S. Under the terms of the SB sailing club as set out in a previous post, I propose Mr. TK be banned for intriducing a "ColRags" thread witout the committee's express approval. (spelling error left in as I quite like the implications)

Belgium , where the f*ck is that ?

here in Belgium where they are strict on the issue.... 2 weeks ago came into Nieuwpoort, singlehanded , no time (and not in the mood) for that silly cone, guess who's lying there...yeah, our dear police.... pass them slowly , the police guy nodding and asking "and where is your cone sir" ... "just started the motor guv, will come up next" ..." yeah, but where is it ? " ...."lying on deck , other side" ...."yeah , but you should have put it up earlier"....." sir, I'm singlehanding, good seamanship tells me to set my priorities right, not hitting you came higher on the list" ...." reckon that's correct, carry on sir, have a nice day sir"

see, that bananian police ain't THAT strict ;-)

Re: Eeerrrrrrr

Did we decide that the cone had to be flying if the engine was on but not driving the boat - or could it then be flown at "half mast" -
Does it therefore match the skippers flies -
in Locker - Flies down,
Half mast - ditto
Crosstrees - no flies on that skipper?

Re: Belgium , where the f*ck is that ?

For whom it may concern: in Swedish waters there is no need to fly the cone. This is explicitly stated by law. (I don't know why though, possibly they realised that they do not have enough police boats to enforce otherwise.)

However I am thankful for this thread, it reminded me of getting one before I get off to visit Nigel.
