When we head out knowing we’re probably going to have to motor, we’ll put the main up as a matter of course just to stop us rolling. Fully battened main sheeted hard in doesn’t slat about and makes motoring in a calm but with an underlying swell MUCH more comfortable. I agree that it often supplies a bit of assistance.
As I’ve said before, if we’re crossing shipping lanes etc I’ll usually put the cone up. But I acknowledge that we have a moderately sized boat that weighs 11 or 12 tonnes and has reasonably wide decks etc so the job is hardly a chore.
