I took my Brother in law out on the boat over the weekend in the Solent, he snapped a few photos in High definition, he asked what he considered to be a simple question...............who's fault was this ?

I see no motoring cones on the sailboats which makes it a clear cut decision.

The RN skip should be called upon to answer for his blatant flouting of the colregs.

I am not familiar with the Solent (some might say I am lucky), but my guess is that it is probably regarded as a 'narrow channel' and therefore Rule 34(b) applies and the yacht is wrong on two accounts as it is less than 20m and is a sailing vessel.

I don't believe there is any fault - the photo makes it appear as though the yacht is very close to the warship but I bet the warship passed well clear. The clue is the relative size of the vessels.

yes the one with a gun is a bit bigger /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Note how close the shadow is on the grey slightly larger Frigate.

I'm not sure what the warship was up to, they seemed to be aimlessly cruising around the Solent on Saturday. Perhaps it was family day or something? Also not sure why the anchor was dangling down, the didn't seem to stop anywhere.

Whose fault was what? There's nothing happening here.

Telephoto compression might make it look as though the boat on the right is about to be hit by the frigate, but it isn't.

'Poor Photography Blamed In Diana Crash Anchor Strobe Collision Debate'

Given that the warship is deeper drafted than the sailboats and Solent has defined channels for shipping, he is most likely in such channel and therefore by way of Colregs within his rights to expect the yachts to give way.
BTW - where they Scumsail ? Even more reason to cause them to alter.

I'm not an expert of yachts but it could be a Diehler, not part of the sunsail fleet.

I think it was Racing, even winning as he didnt want to loose ground, I would have been full astern !

Sail no. I think was GBR 1135L 'Vela', could be wrong

I was under the impression that you are not racing if you are flying your ensign? you may have been but have now retired.?

But then again down their I understand they do things differently.

Artificial Intelligence is no match for Natural Stupidity

They're the collision reg's not the 'getting a bit close' reg's.
However, most of the E solent is part of the HM Port of Portsmouth, so getting within 100m can cause a little friction!

Absolutely- has the Skipper of the grey mobo got a licence for that big gun???
Thought we weren't allowed even a flare pistol on board post Hungerford! That's why mobo's pass so close nowadays, just out of grenade range /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
