Coastguard volunteers on 'strike'

Re: Coastguard volunteers on \'strike\'

I am a CG in the SE and had not heard of this 'strike'.
Nobody does the job 'for the money' as it's so little it is irrelevant. But the MCA side of the story (as reported) is pretty dreadful.
And I feel for the victim (again, as reported) but I have to say I am a bit surprised at folk going on strike.

Yes,

what the MCA seem to be not taking on board is that there IS a difference between "Volunteering" and being a "Self-Imposed Martyr". It is their TIME that they give, NOT the security of their future.

The establishment has taken this on board with convicts in prisons where, we are told, the villains are to be deprived of their freedom ONLY, to impose anything more, like horrible living standards, is to "infringe their human rights". However, we seem to expect Coastguard Volunteers to not just give up their time but to put their future at risk too.

I hope that this new MCA Chief who has come from the Charity Sector will take this on board, remedy it with a stroke of his pen and do it quickly. He's actually lucky to already get the rescue service for free courtesy of the RNLI so what's his problem?

Re: Coastguard volunteers on \'strike\'

Whilst I am reluctant to support an emergency service going on strike, I have to side with the Teams on this. They do some amazing stuff that adrenalin adicts would be proud to add to their lists. They need to know that they and their families will be supported in the event of an accident. It is simple. Protect these people or loose them. I am sure that there are many team members out there looking at the sense in offering themselves to do this stuff.

It is tragic that this injury was sustained doing an animal rescue which can be far more hazardous to the team members than rescuing humans.

Re: Yes,

Just a thought, but I wonder what happens when the RNLI and mountain rescue volunteers are injured in the "line of duty". I see no reason why the Coastguard volunteers should be treated any differently.

Re: Yes,

I was in the TA and was badly injured in a parachute descent on exercise way back (3 weeks in hospital and 2 ops) resulting in 1 leg being a bit shorter than the other, now I didnt loose my job tho I could of if I had been a Ballet dancer! but i am still physically impared and suffer occasionaly from pain, Did I get compensation? no. Would I have if I had lost my job? Not enough anyway.
