If you go out of range from your supplier, 112 MAY get you the emergency services on another network if there is one in range. In my opinion it not worth the risk. For a few quid you can get a good VHF which will reach the coastguard and/or other boats which my be nearby.

Yes I agree. The reason I mentioned it earlier was that, under some circumstances,if you are out of range from your supplier, you can make 112 or indeed 999 calls in the UK on any supplier that you may have a signal from. I am not advocating going out without a VHF, just trying to help anyone who does.Still no use if you don't have a phone signal.
