And if you have a scanning radio and preset the channel(s) you intend to use with your friends, you also never need to use 16. We also have 09 as a hailing channel over here, how about you?

If you go out of range from your supplier, 112 MAY get you the emergency services on another network if there is one in range. In my opinion it not worth the risk. For a few quid you can get a good VHF which will reach the coastguard and/or other boats which my be nearby.

Thanks. 09 is used as an additional hailing channel, not for emergency calls. The CG monitors 16, but not 09. Just gets "Hi, let's go to 68" calls on 16.

Nope. I know that you guys have 09, but over here 16 is the only calling channel.

Nothing to stop groups pre-choosing their own working channel, as you say.

Yes I agree. The reason I mentioned it earlier was that, under some circumstances,if you are out of range from your supplier, you can make 112 or indeed 999 calls in the UK on any supplier that you may have a signal from. I am not advocating going out without a VHF, just trying to help anyone who does.
