Coastal Rides poor service

That's not too bad when you look at the amount of transactions in the last 12 months, when you look up any large volume sellers they allways have a few negatives.
They only sell about 40 items a month and they're in the UK. I'd expect 100% or very close to it. 9 neutral/negatives a year isn't great feedback. If problems are sorted out then the -ve feedback can be cancelled.

I have always found Paul the owner very helpful, so maybe a phone call direct to him will resolve matters to your satisfaction.

that's a good idea, thanks for the suggestion. I've been talking with Tony who has also been very helpful.. I think this is a case of someone else in the organisation not providing the required service. Tony, said the original mistake was due to receiving advice from a colleague that a simple length of rubber hose would do the job. Supposition of course but I suspect the same individual found the second hose in a 'box of bits' and felt it'd suffice. If I am correct, I'd suggest Paul needs to have a word with them to ensure what's sold matches what's despatched.

A hose may not be a big deal to CR and it's clearly a low(ish) value item but boy has it severely messed up my plans for this weekend, that's the real value of this hose

fwiw, I've also bought around a grand worth of stuff from them.
I'm very pleased but I guess the main reason is that I was buying mainly fitout items in a v.loose manner never bought something with certain specs.
Have to say that on each order at least one item (once 3!) weren't available and they sent me some other similar ones instead. On each occasion they'd just through a couple more in the order foc, so cannot really complain :D

Gary , why do you need the return hose as well? I thought from the last post on the ram and its associated corrosion issue you just neede the high pressure hose from the pump to the ram and the ram complete?

The return hose varies on different boats and different installations as it depends where the builder installs the reservoir in the engine bay which determines the length of hoses required from the ram to the reservoir and from the reservoir back to the pump inlet .

I think you will find that said hose you have shall we say " commented " on ( being the purpose of this post) is the correct part that you would get over the counter from any volvopenta dealer anywhere in the globe.

Any dealer can only supply what is on the screen as OE part so I'd say they did there best in sending what you asked for.

Another angle to this post is how many times has there been negative feedback on the said company on here? Many times from my memory, I've got to be careful what I type and who I type about these days as last time I remarked about a factual event about a vp supplying agent I ended up with a solicitors letter from the company.

I'd be very careful what you type on here, you will be surprised who looks at this forum of late.

Why didn't you just get Tom to supply what you needed?

Anyway after all this I hope you get sorted quick, you have not missed anything this weekend , I looked at bramble met about two hours ago and it was blowing a good 5/6 from the south. Nice!

thanks Paul.. the pipe has been cut as there are no marks on the end where the clip will have been and the end looks 'chewed'. It is most definitely shorter than it was when installed and besides it's a mute point, a new pipe should have been supplied to the volvo part number specs not a used part with goodness knows how many hours life left in it. The return hose needs replacing, the one I've removed is just seen in the photo I've posted, you can see it's badly corroded so I don't want to take the chance of keeping it in the system considering the criticality of steering on a powerboat.

here's the photo showing the original return hose in the top left corner.. it's buggered

p.s. this hose does not go back to the reservoir

I concluded a year ago when I needed a new heat exchanger that their pricing was OTT for untested secondhand goods and I decided I was better off elsewhere.

I have however edited my post as clearly they have corrected their mistake here reported, albeit possibly as a result of forum pressure.

Well done Coastal a Rides for your efforts to resolve the problem reported.

Use them for cheap new stuff that they can't over describe or mislead you. My experience with used engines 10 years ago was a farce. They haven't improved judging by this and other episodes and doubt they ever will.

If you buy from an over-priced second hand shop, unseen, then this us what you get. Sorry, but this is what concluded a year ago when I needed a new heat exchanger. They wanted £400 for a secondhand unwarranted cooler probably in little better condition than the one I was replacing. When I asked if it had been pressure tested they advised it was simply visually checked - well I already had one that passed that test, and £400 wanted !

A few days ago I expect your expectation was you that you would receive just what you ordered. But what you have received is simply not fit for purpose. I would send the whole lot back and demand your money refunded.

IMHO time to get the barge pole out. Wouldn't touch them - chancers (I would add that in my professional life I am a Re-manufacturer in a different industry, and deplore firms that offer absolute rubbish pretending it to be quality 're manufactured' items).

God knows what wear state the ram is in.

I'm afraid my experiences with CR have also been universally cr4p as well. I wouldn't touch them now, not even with somebody else's bargepole.

Cheers
Jimmy

nice one fellas, there's a Pirtek in Milton Keynes

Man if you really wanna get ripped of use PirteK!!!!!!!

Franchised to rob you blind!

Always ask for a price 1st!

Plenty of Independent Hydraulic Hose companies around who use quality matched product.

The saving on the parts here is £453 less than from a VP dealer for the same new parts, all those who say what a s*** service they get from CR need to look at this saving and think do we want to pay VP prices or take a chance and save a few quid.
I get the impression that people expect main dealer service from backstreet supplier, then complain when it goes wrong.
A positive here is I needed a s/hand part back in the summer and phoned CR who got this for me and was there the next morning, fitted and on the water with no time lost so it can be done.

I might be wrong but I think Gary's issue is that he paid for new parts, not secondhand.

I agree about the saving being important to take into account but that only works when you compare like for like (or new to new). You can't compare new to secondhand as with secondhand there is no recourse if it fails the very next day. It is different again if the parts have been remanufactured/service exchanged but again it depends on the warranty when comparing value.

As for Pirtek, Hose Doctor, Hydraulic Supermarket and the others, I agree that they would sort Gary out with a hose in 20 minutes but I also understand Gary ordering the two hoses so he had everything needed to complete the work without messing around. Unfortunately, it would appear his desire to rock up, fit and forget hasn't played out so I understand his frustration.

Doesn't matter how much cheaper they are, if the parts are carp you are wasting precious time and getting a load of hassle. From my experience and of quite a few people on here and potentially many more that we won't hear about this outfit is not capable of consistently supplying serviceable used parts. If you buy from them expect the worse but if you get lucky you might just get a good used part when you want it.
As I said they are ok to buy discounted new parts from but if you want used then they seem consistently rubbish.

that's correct Paul, this is the email i sent when confirming the order.. remember they did a great job with the ram and pressure hose so hopefully, this is just a 'blip' when it comes to my experience. I've sent an email to Paul and Tony so hopefully I'll get a positive experience and will post back here to confirm if I do. Here's the email:

Hi Tony, thought it best I send an email to back up the discussion we just had so there’s no mistake when the parts are resent.

The ram and ‘a simple length of rubber pipe with no fitments’ has arrived at my address. The ram looks fine apart from one of the bungs was misfitted so hydraulic oil has leaked into the packaging. The main issue is a simple length of rubber hose has been provided instead of the purchased Volvo 872217 return hose and also, there is no nipple or o-ring provided as you’d confirmed there would be at time payment was taken over the phone.

Please provide genuine unused Volvo Penta parts delivered to my home address. The part numbers are as follows:

Item number in diagram
Part description
Part number
16
Return hose
872217
3
Nipple
872698
5
o-ring
955985

I am also resending the link to the diagram within the link below so you can talk to your colleague to explain genuine Volvo Penta parts are required. A cut off length of rubber hose costing a few quid bears no resemblance to the parts sold as confirmed when we spoke this afternoon.

http://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-explodedview-7738870-64-3463.aspx%20i.e

You confirmed the parts will be despatched on Monday. Can you confirm when sent as I need to re-arrange my engineer to fit the ram and hoses.

Kind Regards Gary

Feeling pretty low this morning, Lisa's just posted on Facebook of an intended trip over to the Folly Inn and I cannot do likewise due to this issue. What a day for boating (that I am missing :( )

Taken from the cockpit of our boat 10 mins ago

That's my point, when you want new genuine VP parts you place order with VP dealer (not a middle man) and you get what you ordered, a lot of VP dealers are discounting parts as well so shop around, and looking at the prices here in question these parts must be old stock as a dealer wouldn't even be able to buy from VP at those prices.

Sorry to here about your problem with the parts Gary and I hope it gets sorted soon.
Looking at your photo the weather looks like its worth a drive down to the marina.
