Does anyone in and around the Clyde area have advise and recommendations of good surveyors, I am particularly interested in the ones that do a thorough inspection and also if anyone has experience and names of the ones to give a wide berth to.

Ian Nicolson, with the caveat that he'll talk your ears off. Specialises on wooden craft but can turn his hand to anything, with an emphasis on useful information(i.e. what needs doing) rather than a bland insurance survey. 01436842224 if I remember, but you'd be advised to check that.

+1
very thorough. Use him if buying any boat, or if you REALLY want to know.

It sortof depends whether you are buying or selling or insuring.
If you are buying then get the very best of the bunch to give you reassurance and negotiating power. If you are selling........well let's be realistic.

Just to say that I - then very much a newby - used Paul Jeffes after taking recommendations. I got a very helpful report in a timely manner, which pointed out issues with the boat that I'd never have found for myself, at least not before something broke! Having addressed all those issues (including one that I thought could wait, but which ended up with a bilge-full of diesel from a failed fuel tank :(), I have confidence that there are no evil things lurking in some dark recess.

Team missed some pretty important and (with afterthought) obviously smelly faults on my boat. I think they tell you what you want to hear (and don't mention the bad bits!)
+1 for Survey1

Used Ian Nicholson for the initial purchase survey and Donald Clark of Tignabruaich for the recent insurance survey.

Horses for courses, Nicholson added lots of value but was more expensive. Not sure you need that for a routine insurance survey.
