Club pennent etiquette

Re: Norwegian Flag

HAHA, yes in fact it would. But you don't have to fly the Belgian flag under the port crosstrees, as this is not required. The courtesy flag however is.

Another question: when you take down the ensign in the evening, is the courtesy flag to be left flying or taken down?

I read somwhere that all _flags_and_ensigns_ are to be taken down, only pennants are left flying at night. But most foreign boats leave their courtesy flags flying, don't they?

Curtesy flags

As to down or left up in port etc. at night depends on country ..... eg Rumania was 24 hrs cont. up ..... don't know if still applies ..... in fact when I used to sail there on ships ... a guard used to keep watch on the ship and make sure it STAYED up !!!!

Courtesy flag

Should be left up, unless directed to the contrary. It is a formal recognition that the vessel, which legally is part of the territory whose ensign she flies, is submitting to the legal jurisdiction of the nation whose waters she has entered.

As Nigel says, the more the nation you are visiting resembles what the seafarer terms "Marlboro Country" (nothing happens without a box of 200 Marlboro changing hands - Roumania was an excellent example!) the more fuss is made over courtesy flags.

The "long-serving member" of the club has demonstrated gross bad manners. You were in error, but a friendly word to you at the time, rather than a more formal communication to your father later was appropriate. We all make mistakes!
