I am determined to use my boat through the winter, weather permitting, but would like peoples views on the vast range of clothing available e.g. Is Musto ocean HPX the daddy or is there a less famous make that is just as good? Thanks
I suppose it is, but I hardly think you're going to need it for what passes for winter in the UK. I went ski-ing last February and - because I'm a tight-fisted git who didn't want to buy loads of ski-ing gear - I used my Musto Coastal jacket and trousers with thermal vest and tights and zip-in jacket liner, and was far too hot most of the time, even at 2,000 metres plus.
Ocean HPX is for idiots racing nutterboats in the Southern Ocean, innit? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
You will definitely need a set of Musto ocean HPX but don't forget to buy the heated under-suit as well - you can plug it into your genny - just like an electric blanket really but tailored. The hot water heated under-suits are too heavy and you need a separate water heater and pump - go for the electrically heated type.

I zip the legs back on my shorts and have even been known to use sleeved shirts but otherwise no real change /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Surely a string vest is essential?
No prudent mariner would go to sea without one........ would they?
Plenty of clothing options above, but I keep a fishing type flotation suit handy, they're warm, waterproof and include buoancy (not life jacket) even a whistle attached, full suit about £100, two piece a bit more.
If you're out in the open on the colder days, a hand warmer is a great tip.
If you try one get the type that has a small charcoal log (100mm by 12mm approx.) They burn for about 6 hours and if you don't like wearing gloves they can really make a difference to comfort.
Cost about £8 from golf or tackle shops. Spare log strips about £4, pack of 12.
I find a full old fashion divers suit the best to keep you warm and dry. Get SWIMBO to man the air pump though if you want to breathe now and again. Try and get the brass helmet with at least 3 portholes. Best put down some rubber mating to save damage to your woodstrip floors as the heavy lead boots may do a tad bit of damage. Dave.
Good to speak to you on the phone Dave, I took your advice and bought the Musto Offshore HPX jacket /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Not sure about what you said about the Thames Estuary being like an Ocean and kicking up rough enough to need the bibbed trousers as well, so I left them. At £300 just for the trousers I couldn't justify them as the jacket is quite long, by the time I have my jacket and sea boots on the trousers would only really cover my knees /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
The hand warmers seem a good idea, that's something to search for at the weekend /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I just need some wet weather now to try the jacket, let's hope next weeks forecast is right /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
What about those helemts I saw at SIBS with radio communications in, they looked cosy? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Ah, rather tight and short /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Seriously though the trousers add a serious benefit in keeping you snug, the chafing from wet thighs is pretty gruesome and knocks your performance off pretty quickly!
But then I'm a raggie!
Another reason is I'm told (SWMBO) we look pretty good in them without the jacket - rather ruff-t-toughty /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
I've got some cheaper HH ones that will do, £300 was a mad price when most of it is covered by the jacket anyway. I will have the canopies up and the cockpit heating on when I am out in the Thames Ocean so it's only really for walking to and from the car to the boat in the marina /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
