Clothing for winter boating?

Being saily types wife and I have good quality "offshore" jackets (and I confess, trousers as well which will plunge me into the profligate spender class in the eyes of the saddo's /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif) and I consider them a good investment.

Putting aside that there can be quite rough conditions here (but never very cold), wifie who grew up in the tropics often gets hers on even when motoring in sheltered waters during mid summer on cooler days /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. By late autumn here (which is the latest we normally cruise) I am getting into mine, especially on wetter days - again, even in sheltered waters.

I find a second, lighter hooded jacket (lighter than harbour weight) useful for warmer days (maybe with woollen jersey under if coolish) - that I also find useful in moderate winter climates when on bigger commercial MoBo's with enclosed and heated wheelhouses for going on deck into the slipstream.

O rings are essential, expensive foul weather gear isn't, and you don't see the need to tell us how rich you are in virtually every post.

GC1 on the other hand seems to need, and want, to shove his wealth down our throats at every opportunity. He even mentions another forumite buying a V45 at 350K when actually this chap didn't tell us how much he spent, it was only when CG1 stepped in telling us all that he was looking at a considerably more expensive boat in Italy that cost came into it.

Looks like this is becoming a CG1 forum for his boasting and his supporters.

I'm off, had enough of it.

I would just like to contribute here that I have found a significant correlation between price and usage on many such items. As an example I spent the ridiculous sum of 200 on a goretex lined sweater (oximoron?) 10 years ago. Since then it has logged many thousands of miles and I rarely go anywhere without it. I have a lot of normally priced equivelent function items historically but they never get used now - many are new in drawers/loft etc

Secondly not all Ocean gear ever sees an ocean - some is both fashion gear and functional gear. (Being a plain grey I wouldn't class my jumper in the fashion mould though!)

Maybe you're an airline pilot? Do you wear it to bed as well? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

A pair of thin neoprene sailing glives with leather covered palms and digits - IIRC made by Gill - curiously warmer when wet than dry.

but this is only below -40 above that it's just shorts and a singlet /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Where did you get that from Duncan, I could do with one? :-)

As for the prices of boats, are people plain daft, stupid or thick, boats of any type cost money, money makes the world go round. I mentioned the prices of certain boats to show I was being careful in what I saw as value for money e.g. The new Cranchi 34 for around £300k, that is £160k cheaper than a V48, did anyone know that before I mentioned it? Time for people to keep out of threads and conversations unless they have something useful to contribute, and less verbose diatribe.

Off topic but one example was the mentioning that I never sent money or address details to buy a forum flag, I was slagged off for that, what the writer fails to remember and is misleading others was that I did buy one and it was posted to me, and on a visit to Waikiki yacht club in Honalulu I exchanged it for one of their burgees, the forum burgee is now proudly on display on their wall with hundreds of others, so less lies and drivel please.

Following a tip from a forum member earlier this year I bought my daughter (14) a jacket from Lidl when they did a week of 'boaty' stuff in about April time I think. It cost 35 quid and looked pretty decent. I wasn't over worried about the quality as it was mainly for our August cruise: remember August? Wow did we get some wind and rain! The coat was good as gold. Very warm and waterproof. I guess it's about coastal grade and for the money it seems to be a bit of a bargain. I'll certainly check out some of their stuff next year.

Balaclava !

Full face, will keep you very warm in cold winds.

I challenge you to find one that costs more than £10, or why not get SWMBO to knit you one /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Well bugger me, no I certainly did not realise that before. How stupid of me. Thankyou so much for the education lesson, we are all better people because of you. And I hope you don't mind me joining in on your thread or is this now a GC1 private conversation forum where only the invited few can join in.

If you are highlighting (1) your carefulness and (2) value for money you might like to edit this as I suspect it is actually incorrect..............

Duncan, what are you saying, wash your mouth out with soap. GC1, the god of the boating world, cannot be wrong. What does he need a boat for when he can walk on water?
