Cleaning Brass

Does anybody w=know the best way to clean brass that has laid up for 10 years and gone completely black, I have tried Brasso and duraglit, with no success, the only way I can see is to rub it back with wet & dry or something similar, but this leaves scratches.
What other old tricks are there, that i do not know about?.

My wife thinks Worcester sauce and salt may do the trick.
However I think progresively finer wet & dry finishing with brasso or duraglit would be more effective.

HP sauce

Try it!

Knick the bottle out of the galley, smear it all over the brass and leave over night. Wash off with fresh water and buff it up to a nice shine. The citric acid does the job.
When I were a lad in the good old RN we used 'Limers' a drink issued in warm climates that was citrus based. (Gawd knows what else was in there...)

Wully.

Re: Coca-cola should be even faster. *

True .... in the MN we used all sorts of concoctions as well .... you could even try a mixture of :

Coke, Vinegar and Brasso ..... if you can stand the smell while putting it on !!!!

I would leave it in a shallow basin for overnight and then wash off next day .....

You just say "That brass is looking a bit scruffy dear. It let's the whole boat down." Then go and do something "nautical".

Try...

Starbright's Hull Cleaner with a very fine scouring pad. At the end of the day it normally boils down to elbow grease....I have tried all the other rremedies and always ended up with arm ache.
