Classic Wave sunk off Kerrera

There is a news flash on the Classic Wave site but it doesn't add much to the BBC report. I saw her at Dunstaffnage earlier in the month. Another forumite heard the Mayday, engine failure apparently the cause. I think the winds went to F6 on Saturday. I was following the Tiree reports but wasn't actually there.

We were off Easdale when it started and overheard it all. The most interesting thing to me was that the first response of the lifeboat once the boat had sunk and the people were in the water was to request a helicopter. Having just done an RYA YM preparation course where we had discussed whether the first response to a Man overboard should be a Mayday, it was a salutory lesson that the 'professionals' should deem it necessary.
As far as the weather was concerned, the wind was maybe F5 but there was quite a big swell. It was also the very bottom of a Spring tide and I wondered if that had anything to do with them running aground. The vis was also poor.

It looks in the photo as if the sail covers are still on - or am I wrong ?

[/ QUOTE ]:Yes, I wondered about that. Even if motoring, I generally have the main up for stability... what a crappy thing to happen just as you turn for home.

It said in one of the reports that when the engine failed they managed to unroll the genny but it wasn't enought to keep them off the rocks.

As I understand it they were heading South from Dunstaffnage towards Preston, motoring into the wind. The engine stopped as they were passing between Bach Island and Kerrera. They didn't run aground but were carried onto the rocks.

It just goes to show how quickly things can happen. We never have the boom cover on while under way, just in case we need sail quickly.
