Sat at anchor in Cawsand bay, 2 lovely days but a moderate sea breeze yesterday. The yacht anchored nearest to us was making an unholy row with his shroud banging constantly against his mast.
The couple on board were sat in their cockpit and ignored the noise from just a few feet in front of them. Unless they were both deaf, I don’t understand why one of them could not have either tightened or tied off the offending shroud. Surely just a minute is all it would take.
Luckily they were only there for a few hours, so peace soon reigned. Would it have been reasonable to ask them to do something to stop the racket? I guess if they were deaf shouting across to them would have been pointless. I don’t like to appear awkward or confrontational so I did nothing.
I can understand it if we were in a marina and the boat was unoccupied, but with crew on board in an anchorage?! Maybe some people like the noise.

There is enough written about fastening (?frapping) halyards that they shouldn't have been surprised to be asked.

If you asked, they’d have been either apologetic and sorted it or told you to F off, so I’d have asked politely.

Halyards clanging against masts are annoying to all in the vicinity and it would be entirely reasonable to ask your noisy neighbours to sort the problem out. It would only take a couple of minutes after all.

Further, a halyard constantly frapping against the mast could conceivably damage the mast's anodising so it would be in your noisy neighbours' interest to eradicate the problem.

I can't help wondering if they were doing it deliberately, to annoy the motorboatist! Anyway, just remember, each clang will be chewing up his expensive anodised mast, clang by clang...
Some people are deaf to things like that, I watched a skipper blithely ignore his sail cover flacking in a gale, (we were below at anchor) and it sounded like a deck mounted Oerlikon gun, the whole boat was shivering until there was an even louder bang and it flew away over Alderney..(.yes I deliberately watched it happen, to see if he said or did anything. But no.)

It's pretty rude to disturb the peace with very annoying noisy flappy halliards when it's so easy to stop the noise; carry some pound shop bungees then if you see them again or encounter similar behaviour you can offer them a free bungee as they are clearly bereft.

I saw someone last summer preparing for a windy night by guiding his halyards into hooks on his spreaders, this product: Halyard Spreader Hooks buy now | SVB . It looked like an interesting idea, so I bought and installed them on my boat (Puffin's spinnaker halyard and spinnaker boom topping lift frap badly in strong winds). I haven't had a chance to use them yet.

I just secure the shackles around the boom, handrails or pulpit. Why does everyone thing that the spi pole ring is the official halyard retaining device?

Next time send a message by signal flag ??
And of course beat out S O S on a frying pan to get his attention
Once he starts to hear an annoying clanging tap tap.. well ya never know ..
Then we get into reanchoring (?) ahead of him and idling the diesels for a bit ..
tricky innit ? Passive aggressive , as you astutely recognise , everyone’s afternoon is ruined ..

Aha ..invite them over for a coffee . ?

Re anchoring, there’s a thought, unfortunately there were no divers handy to help;)

One of the problems with anchoring disputes is who got there first. Although there is no defence to letting halyards flap, it can be harder to complain if the offending boat was first in situ. If you are anchored in comfortable solitude, then at least you know you are on strong ground. I haven't often been disturbed at anchor. On one occasion in Salcombe someone with a young family anchored nearby and a little later started reading bedtime stories to the children in a loud affected voice. After maybe 3/4 hr of this I got fed up and called across asking her to call it a day. This didn't go down very well.

You shouted at someone reading their kids a bedtime story? I can't believe I have just read that.

You weren’t there. With a large anchorage available, they parked themselves a couple of boat-lengths away before hacking away interminably in a loud voice. I never said that I shouted. How many of your bedtime stories go on for an hour?
