Has it become difficult for someone resident in the EU to open a European bank account? I did so immediately before Brexit, when it was quite straightforward. It's a simple enough matter to transfer funds from the UK bank where my pension is paid, using 'Wise' or similar.
Having a local bank does make some transactions a lot easier and eliminates ATM charges. However unlike British banks, most European banks charge for running a current account.
