I am thinking about buying my mistress(Well a boat is as expensive as a mistress but without the problems from the wife) Radar for her christmas present.

1. Is Radar really worth having
2. If so why.
3. The basic Raymarine 72 seems good value?
3. What are you buying yours?

cheers

I have radar and was thinking that one linked to a chartplotter would be good. Planning permission has been refused - didn't even get to committee stage and I'd already included extra-marital discount at around 40%.
Looks like more socks and grundies for me.

1. Yes worth every pound when trying to cross channel in Fog
2. You can see and plan avoidance in good time
3/4. I read the reports and choose JRC 1500. Easy to fit, use and read. Its not necessary to fit scanner high up on mast.

To answer your 4 questions:

1. Radar is very worth while - I've had my R10X for 8 years and would put it lower down priority list than a compass, but ahead of the GPS in the usefulness stakes.
2. The fog scenario is not common, but here's a few real-life examples - single handing set the buzzer on the inner and outer guards with 6 sweeps at 10 min intervals and get your head down - avoiding lobster pot markers after dark - picking up cardinal markers in seastate5 when Trinity House have taken off the topmark - sidling into Porthcressa at 03.00 of a new moon night - avoiding 10,000 tonners anchored broadside on across the Guadalquivir in fog - going through Bardsey on a spring flood with 50m visibility - picking up unlit French voiliers just N of the Raz at 23.00 in September in a SW 7 with driving rain - taking a gibbering St Mary's cox up the Chenal du Four on spring flood in the same conditions. Basically its value is any time when vis is not perfect
3. Don't know about the Raymarine 72 - but prefer CRT to LCD - more signal variation - have been earnestly recommended by Raytheon techies and others in the trade to hang onto the R10X as the best radar produced (by JCR for Raytheon).
4. I'm buying mine new cutless, drive-shaft and waterseal for Christmas.

Christmas came early here too - July in fact. I was in two minds whether to get radar, but decided to go for it, choosing the Raytheon SL72. This proved to be worth every penny crossing the Dover straits when the vis dropped half way across from 3 miles to 300 metres and stayed that way until we were through the North East bound lane. It was my first time at using radar in anger (well, fear in fact), and now I'd recommend it as essential for anyone venturing into areas with much shipping.

I've been delighted with the SL72, which on a flat calm day can even pick out eight inch floats. As the sea gets up, small objects get lost in the clutter, but navigation buoys, boats and of course ships provide very clear targets.

I've just bought a Raymarine radar/chart plotter. I've only used it a couple of times , but in my limited experience the radar is going to be invaluable. Would I have a radar instead of a GPS ? Yes I think so . Mind you the chart plotters's great fun. It even puts me on the right berth position in my marina , which is of course totally invaluable , as we all get lost in our marinas don't we ?

Radar is a wonderful tool. I have a koden 32 mile, CRT set, great value and great performance, mines an older model, but with all the bells and whistles with a 10" screen, I like big screens! I trained with mine in good visibilty, looking at the coastline, then seeing what the radar picture was showing, it gives you an idea of what you will see in fog etc. I turn it on when I leave port even in good visibilty now, its all good experience. Linked to GPS, the cursor will show you the lat long of points of interest, which you can plot on the chart to show if you are correct in your indentification. I hope this makes sense! Shop around, there are some great deals on older model/new gear.

Talking of mistresses..

An accountant, a solicitor and a sailor were discussing whether it was better to have a wife or a mistress.
"Better go for a wife - think of the tax breaks" said the accountant.
"Better go for a mistress - think of the alimony" said the solicitor.
"Have both" said the sailor. "Then when you're not with the wife she thinks you're with the mistress; and when you're not with the mistress she thinks you're with the wife. That way you can spend all your time sailing".

Beware of undocumented bug.

Installing Mistress V2.0 alongside Wife 1.0 can cause problems. You may get away with Mistress 1.0, but in either case Wife 1.0 is liable to de-install itself and delete all your money files.
