Ey lad there's nowt new. When I had my National Ospray. I used to race folks. Me going backwards, them going farwards. I still won! Also usefull for stopping. Just lean on the boom for reverse thrust. You must try it with Englander Colin. I know it's a little bit bigger, but then again, so are you!!!

No one can force me to come here-----------

sorry Grehan , the sports you propose are far too polite and at best you can only break somebody's leg...ziz vil not do you mudislander, our long lost cousin from Krautistan would cry !

-100 meter backward in a straigh line on Rustlers (JJ can be used as tender , fender , ender)
-why not mudthrowing , seems like on occasion , that's all these two fine groups do to one another (apart from crosslurfing , can I coin that term ?) why not turn it into a regular contest, Violetta is bound to be the referee , maybe Endy will even join in , or why don't we all just throw mud at him ? or better , Endy and JJ as general practicing targets ?
-and for some (won't name names of course ;-) ) 200 meters chainsawing behind derny might be an appropriate challenge

and why , I pray thee , nobody has even thought about a debating contest on the subject of plastic fantastics , ragging and potting , and SWINGING the blue pennant Steve , of course all this while slurping and indefinite supply of fine earl grey and eatingkilos of scones

oops sorry , will now crawl back into my dirty hole

Reverse engineering

At the risk of delving into esotorica, if one were sailing backward down the Solent, what do you reckon the collision regs would be?

If the boom were held out by a gybe preventer on the port side it would appear that you would be on starboard tack, however in the direction you're actually sailing you are in reality on port tack.

Help!

Re: solved?

If adrift, you bow would be going sideways. But the (say) starboard side of the boat does not then immediately become the bows. Thus it folows that when sailing in reverse, the starboard and port tacks remain as they are when sailing normally.

Re: Not Quite!

Agreed, that Port and Starboard are unchanged, but as to Port/Starboard tack it is not so obvious.

Starboard tack can either be defined as when the wind is coming from the starboard side of the boat, or as when the boom is out to port. Now when sailing backwards with the preventer, the boom is on the same side as the wind - so the two definitions are no longer equivalent.

IIRC Colregs defines Port/Starboard tack by the location of the boom, so the simple visual check is still correct.

More interesting perhaps is the definition of crossing ahead of or behind a boat going backwards!

Re: So when is it going to be??? NM

Have to be at the boatshow, and non organised, as do we know who will be coming for sure? Maybe KIMBO would get the corporate credit card going!! Fat chance! We could all go to the London Apprentice, Murray would be very pleased with nthe business and it's right beside the river. Just a suggestion, not my neck of the woods.

Re: So when is it going to be??? NM

OK so London Boat Show, Like the idea of the London Apprentice,

So how about Saturday 4th 7 pm.

Someone will need to coordinate numbers. If we are eating - - why not get Murray (the owner?) to co-ordinate it. Anyone wanting to go can phone him and book onto the 'event' by say 30th Dec so he can plan tables.

How about it?

Re: So when is it going to be??? NM

Murray is the owner, however it wouold be impossible for me to arrange anything, as I'm in Norway and live in the med, however I think it's a good idea, 4th seems ok to me, how does that tie in with the show etc. It's ok for me, as I will be staying literally across the road.

Re: Very unfair...

to be rammed on the starboard side by a vessel sailing backwards and therefore showing green lights. Especially since the backward-sailor is the stand on vessel, and need give no other signal provided no engine?

Re: re-run sat 11th@my place anyone?

It worked quite well last time, all things considered. But this time i will get some stickers made so that normal-looking people don't have to introduce themselves to bewildered SWMBO's as "I'm Twonky!" or whatever...

I do work in Central London, so I could organise something with the London Apprentice if that was felt appropriate?
