Absolutely brilliant pictures. How far did he go? The more I see of those replica dutch barges, the more I want one. Proper ships. We're looking for our next boat now but my dear wife is less than convinced it ought to be a barge. Got any blinding arguements? I suppose the other downer is that I would probably never be allowed to moor at Byrons again!

Never bleedin' wanted you here anyway. Only tolerate you so I can grope Ann when you aren't looking.
Actually Chris. I like some of those barges they have a little ship feel about them but I think channel crossings would need heavy planning no more than a 2-3.
No mate. Barges have character (unlike NBs) also my experiences with them has always been good with them showing good sea-manners and maritime expertise.
Kei lives just above Oxford at the boat yard there. IIRC its slightly to big to get through the next lock upstream !
Well Parglena is our home and the real plus is that there is so much space, in fact more room than some 1 bedroom flats that I have looked at. The downside is you cant get a barge up on the plane and travel at more then 10 knots.
20metres is really the maximum length as there are new EU regs coming out that will affect all leisure craft over that (TRIWV 2006) download link here http://users.skynet.be/sky34301/triwv.html
Its not just channel crossings.
We are off to the Medway this year and will bail if its over force 3 and come up the Thames.
Some Barges are certified to CatB and have no problems however it can be a bit uncomfortable in a force 4.
Point taken about taking them to sea, although I have been looking at some new ones (with disapproving frowns from 'er indoors) that can be built to RCD Cat B. Even so, you're right - something to be a bit cautious about. Mind you, if I go down that route, I only plan two Channel crossings - one to get it to France then, five years later, one to bring it back. Unless I could sell it over there of course.
Thanks for that. The boat we have just sold was just under 15 metres and 25 tonnes so an increase to 20 certainly doesn't faz me. But my good lady is a bit conservative and seems to think even changing to just one engine is a bit risky. Likes at least 12 cylinders and 400 hp to feel comfortable! I'm still trying to work out whether she has got some sort of hang-up with the image. You know, long, sleek and gleaming white vs black, dumpy and very commercial-looking. Not that she would ever admit to this. I'll need to get Byron to use his charm(?) on her /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
