chipping a diesel engine

They work well on Cars.

A tad more smoke as the turbo kicks in, but smoother running (Lumpier idle though) and better economy.

Reckon 20% more power, 35% seems a tad optimistic.

Hi you cannot chip a kad 43 as there is nothing to chip, its an all mechanical fuel injection system.

The kad 44 and 300 is the edc, electronic diesel control, system version of this series of engine, its 260 hp and 285 hp in the 300 version, vovlo badged the 285 as a 300 to try and kidd us all that they had made the 300 hp barrier, waste of time.

I woulnt chip it if I was you, though I havent heard of any companies in the uk offering an option.

If you want to up the fuel settings then you can but it will smoke more, use more fuel and eventually do damage to the pistons and cylinder liners as it will bore wash the oil off the rings.

Now while were on this subject, and my love before boats was rallying we used to do anything to get more performance to an engine we could find this gave you a better acceleration figure and top end though through the forest about 125mph was enough!, if you up the power on a marine diesel then you have to alter the propellers to get more speed, like adding an extra top gear to a car gearbox otherwise it will give the same speed at the same revs as before, so you will need to repitch the props if its a shaft drive boat or change your duoprops for the next size up.

i had not heard of chipping props before is that easily done and if so who does it.

Oh it's very easy - particularly if you can't read a chart. Just run the boat over a few rocks and the prop{s} will be chipped beautifully and with no effort at all. Who does it? You! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

On a more serious note, the matter raised was about re-pitching the props and that can be undertaken by such companies as Steel Developments in South London.

Lou you can only alter the prop size when you have more horsepower, dont do it before you have altered your engines!

What boat is it you have?

We have tried having a few boats chipped for customers who are obsessed with cracking the magic 50kts.
One was a 27ft RIB with a CMD 320hp, I took the boat over to the chipping guy and he loaded in 4 different programmes and none have worked successfully, the first one just made us hit the rev limiter so the throttle would shut down abruptly as it cut in.
Then he tried a different map and then we couldn't trim the drive out more than 2 degrees as the torque was too high, we then fitted a different prop and went through all the same again, I tried to explain to the customer that he needed more real HP, i.e. a bigger motor, after lots of testing and playing with props this boat doesn't go 1 kt faster than when it came from the factory.
A complete waste of time and money IMHO.
Now the guy is changing it for the latest version we got this week which has a V10 Dodge Viper engine with 700hp and does 75kts +!
The other thing is if you chip a new engine your warranty goes straight in the bin.
I think its better to buy the right motor first time and know it does what it says on the box.

The CMD 320 is already at its top HP from the manufacturer so a chip will only move the torque/fuel consumption graphs around.

If lou found a Zaf 34 with volvo D4s 260 , he may have better success as the D4 is available in 300 hp version ???????????

My opinion in mapping only works on high performance cars that have been restricted for a lower insurance group, or if someone wants their car to top out at 90 instead of 110 so they can get more torque at 60 for towing etc

We know that a lot of marine engines are at their optimum, but the chipping people promise all sorts of wonderful gains with their product which unfortunately many people fall for and are then disappointed, when it doesn't deliver. I am naturally wary of all advertising claims.

If anyone is really interested in chipping then the best place to go is the Birmingham boat show.
this shares the exhibition with the caravan show and there are specialist chipping companies who are really aiming for caravan owners who want to speed down the motorway at 46 mph /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
