Hi
Has anybody purchased and used these snap davits from China ?
On eBay .

293188760137

Are they any good at this price ?

The only thing I may be wary of is the quality and longevity of the rubber. The stainless steel hardware will almost certainly be fine

all very well but consider what happens to your rib/ tender if the rubber fails and it disappears off the platform is it worth the risk to save a few pounds??

I cant help notice the irony of that comment given your user name :p

I doubt there would be a sudden catastrophic failure but rather a degradation if any and the good news is that rubber component is replaceable with a quality piece as I'm pretty sure it's a pattern copy. Ethics of of Chinese copies aside.

Everyone will make their own purchasing decisions and I wouldn't criticise whatever they are. Personally, I wouldn't buy something from China that they've copied and made under God knows what working conditions.

In my view, China bears a large degree of responsibility for Covid19 and the economic fallout (never mind the human cost). I'm not suggesting China should face sanctions or be punished for what's happened but I neither do I feel comfortable helping to support their economy whilst ours is still suffering the consequences. For all I know, Polymarine may have their snap davits made in China, but at least it's a British company.

I appreciate that buying British is now out of fashion and, in a global economy, very difficult. However, that won't stop me trying. I'm also prepared to stop looking for the cheapest and look for quality and ask where it's come from.

I'd agree with you if it wasn't for the elephant in the room. What you're paying for and what you are getting is called extortion. As such I welcome any and all competition.

I'm all for competition, but only if it's fair. Fair competition drives innovation and lowers prices. Stealing intellectual property, trampling workers rights and trashing the environment is not fair competition. #justsaying.

Love the hash tag. It's adorable. Again, really agree with you, but again though the local's price is extortionate and it's either blatant ransom or rampant inefficiency, take your pick. I'll buy British every time I get a square deal. I have British bikes, British cars etc etc so I am fully onboard. What I am not though is a mindless zombie waving my Pro Britain flag accepting that it is my patriotic duty to be fiscally roggered over a barrel by unscrupulous highwaymen on the make.

Excellent Bruce. I think we're furiously agreeing! The key is to establish a price that you think fairly reflects the quality of the goods and sits well with your ethical priorities. (That's why I bought the Insta-Lock snap davits rather than the Weaver ones! ) What I think is wrong is chasing the lowest price to the exclusion of other factors. All that does is drive standards (in the widest sense) to the lowest level and subsidise the, mainly Far Eastern, economies.

Weaver make no mention of any patent or trade mark protection, so anyone can quite legitimately make and sell a similar item in competition.

I just had a delivery of the kit. I am wary of Chinese sellers as they have zero Corporate ethics so be aware you will get done at some point. I have been dealing directly for some years via a small business. There are very good factories and also many backstreet shops that churn out copies from poor quality components. It is fair to say many goods sold via Germany or Eastern EU are actually from China with a mark up. If they come from Manchester or Southampton definitely Chinese. Checking the suppliers address on Google Earth will show you an accommodation address or a block of flats. Why cheaper from China? They have the China Post system which is backed by our glorious Royal Mail that allows China to post goods at zero cost to UK. It takes longer but is legit. UK sellers have to pay RM shipping costs to UK customers!! Also Chinese sellers do not pay VAT in most cases and this undermines UK sellers -furthermore the UK government and HMRC have ignored the problem for years and allow under valuing of imported volumes of goods to be sold via Ebay and others.
Is the davit kit OK? Yes it seems to be quality stainless and very substantial. I cannot vouch for the rubber handle but I would suspect it's exactly the same kit/factory as the "original". It would not be the sole connection point for my dinghy as I would strap it on anyway - it just facilitates getting the thing on board. Buying via Ali Express etc. may give a better chance of getting what you want and not losing your money. Ebay is a lottery and you take your chances. Do your due diligence first. For the record I would not put a generic Chinese inverter on my boat for sure. It could cost you your life. I have just fitted a Chinese diesel heater but there are reams of information on these and the original two branded sellers have been fined for price fixing. I will have fire protection and a heat sensor!
