I too had to hit hard astern on Sunday when leaving Chi, don't generally mind being as considerate as possible to dinghy sailors but it's nice to get a wave or somink to let you know their grateful, particuarly when you are in a channel with restricted depth.

To make things worse for the sailors, I had a friend on board that has sailed dinghy's since god was a dog (and still does), so he was highly embarrased at their etiquite, or lack of it.

I dunno.....you try to be nice and considerate...then u get wound up...then u come on here and give us an earfull about it....then we get wound up..........

Maybe we should put the word out that we are now operating a zero tolerance policy...........maybe even sink one or two of the buggers to get the message across.......

It's ok...I'm only joking..........I think..........

All sounds pretty normal really.

As a member of CYC, and as I understand it, the Dinghy Section are instructed to keep the Marina Channel clear, and vessels entering / leaving the marina have right of way.

All you can do, is have a word with them, or drop them a line. Little point in taking it to the harbourmaster, as I sense he is very pro sail, and as far as he's concerned, they can do no wrong.

Are you gonna name and shame?

Back in the late 80's our neighbour at Chichester a very experienced sailor of both dinghys and his Pentaland (Taiping) was about to enter the lock, dinghy tacked in front of him. Dinghy was rammed and he was very upset and suffered abuse from the dinghy, luckily many many people had seen the incident. Nothing appaparantly changes

From what I have seen and experienced, this is totally typical of dinghy sailors. They think they are something that they are not, with their crappy tuppence-ha'penny, blow-along, useless pieces of plastic junk.

I have thought of a few extra mast head lights R/W/R and point to them when confronted, we have the same problem on the broads and I used to be a dinghy sailor myself. Just shout STARBOARD or WATER at the top of your voice if convincing enough they will tack away.

Come on Dave, tell us what you really think!

Try shouting "My boat has a petrol engine" - that should scatter them over the horizon /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

D'ya know Simon, I haven't had as much reaction to this as I thought. Hmmm...maybe I should have put in print what I really think of dinghies and their owners!!

Should I start an "I hate dinghies" thread? Will I get banned from the forum??

OK - so how about "dingies stink! - and so do their owners!"

Or mebbe "dinghy owners have the most aweful demeanor"

I'll give it some more thought...

What about strong words Bertie Wooster/Boris Johnson style

Dinghy owners - Bounders
Actions of Dinghy owners - Bad Form

I'll be blowed if that doesn't stir them ye'gads

I am sure I have read somewhere in something called col regs about not makeing larger boats in restricted channels give way or similar , but I dont own a marina or a yachtclub!!!

On occasions with one engine out of action, I have been known to just blow the horn five or six times and carry on regardless. It does tend to upset the buggers a bit!! But I aint going up the rocks just to suit there wims of right of way. Getting bashed by a dinghy is a far better option. For me that is. Them, maybe not!!../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re: Me too

As a Raggie I was returning to the Marina on Sunday ( and what a great sail to Brighton and back it was) and also got bounced by hordes of the little buggers. I carried on and almost t boned one old sod who although the race was over just carried on across our path. Grrr

As the young turk HM Davies sails one of the Ichenor Dinghies no hope if you complain.

ps
it was a cloudless weekend and flat seas on both Days to Brighton and return. Only saw two other WAFIs apart from myself and no Mobos. Whats wrong with Brighton as a weekend jaunt for Mobos?
