Cherry Picker

Claymore needs to get to the top of Claymore's mast to inspect and probably replace a seized bearing in the furler.
In considering the safety of getting up there and the fact that I cannot tell at this stage whether this will be a straightforward job and before anyone else comes in with it - yes I'm not getting any younger- I was thinking about hiring a cherry picker

Has anyone ever used one for a job at the masthead?

I know it's a little out of your way, but you could nip back to the Clyde in an anticlockwise direction and visit East Cowes, where a cherry picker is ready and available for that very purpose.

I have, I used to work in a warehouse and borrowed it to do just that. Very easy and safe. However I am lighter than you so you may need to calculate carefully the additional ballast you require to give yourself a reasonable margin of safety. I also hoisted the boat out the water with it by using warps attached to the cleats to antifoul and change the anode. Hope that helps.

I'm sure I read an article in YM about someone taking their boat up the Itchen and getting SWMBO to stand on the bridge and tinker with the mast?

Thinking about it...you coud surely orgainse this when the boat has a young and eager crew on board, desperate to please by rushing up the mast upon your command to inspect/repair any defect?

our consultants hire cherry picckers all the time but a bit of digging has found our sepcial rate is more than the normal one
we use mainly nationwide skylift.
the cost is all in and is normally a day cost or half if you are lucky.

We have hired one a few times for various house repairs - the biggest problem with them is the amount of space required to extend the legs before using it. They have load sensors on the feet and stop and alarm when the wind catches them and the wobble a bit. Much prefer them to a ladder though.

well, it`s a year or four ago but as i recall i was given a price to hire and also a price to insure ( compulsory i may add ).
i seem to recall that the insured value was c £16,000 and the premium was in the hundreds ( enough to put me off the idea). apparently these items are emminently stealable.
it may be a lot cheaper if you return it same day.

When we were coerced by the Skipper into spending the winnings from our placing in the Brixham Trawler Race a few years back (5 gallons of red paint!) the skipper decided we should also paint the mast and derrick. All the crew were covered in filth by then from scraping/painting the hull between tides ( this was a Lavis-built boat from Brixham way) so we jointly grabbed the bugger, lashed him into a bosun's chair tied off to the falls at the top of the mast, hauled him up to the truck and went off to breakfast. He did do quite a good job though!!

Thanks for that - they are quoting about £120 for a day but no mention was made of insurance. I should get the job done in a day without much bother I would have thought, as long as I get together the bits and pieces I'm likely to need in advance.
