Has any one been to Cherbourg recently and experienced any problems with theft etc. We were told by a friend of a friend that there is a lot of hassle from potential UK asylum seekers.
We also heard that French customers were being over efficient. Does this occure in Cherbourg?

we hope to visit next week and have been made nervous by different rumours so would appreciate some feed back.

We had a fleet of boats in Cherbourg this week and also in June. No obvious issues with asylum seekers (actually no sign of asylum seekers and I walked to the ferry terminal and back). Pontoons are open to public access...if you are not so keen on that moor towards the seaward end of the pontoon.

Customs do make inspections in Cherbourg from time to time but as long as your paperwork in order no issue...it'll cost about 30-minutes to one hour as long as you comply with requests and no nastiness. Fast boats arriving in bad weather or odd hours more obvious targets for their attention; I got shadowed from about 10 miles out a couple of years back but I was just about the only motor cruiser in the Channel that day.

Go is my recommendation.

Went last weekend for my first channel crossing and had no problems.

It was busy and we were rafted up outside two other boats which I guess gives a bit of extra security. We saw no signs of the authorities and no trouble.

I think Kim's idea of staying as far from the pontoon entrances as poss is also a good one.

My mate has been based there most of the summer (High Spirits II) and has had nothing to say barring what a good time he has most weekends.

We went over the other week end, arriving v late Friday night, and had no problems with any one, even though we moored on the fuel berth until 8 the next morning. Never had problems at Cherbourg with theft, although pontoons are not secure. We take all the usual security precautions when we leave the boat. We've even had booze delivered, that's been left out all day, and it's still been there when we've got back.
