Check your EHIC card expiry date

Thanks for the heads up, just checked and ours run out the week after we return from holiday next month, so I have just renewed them. If I left it until we might need them next I would undoubtedly forget. :D

Guernsey only i believe. not sure about Aldeney, Jersey is covered

It may be worth checking the precise details on that. A UK resident visiting the Isle of Man gets free emergency care, but this does not include long-term care or repatriation. Air ambulances are expensive.
Anyone visiting IoM who is not UK resident will face the full cost of all treatment. This includes Irish and CI residents. EHIC does not apply.

Just curious...
Do IOM residents get free healthcare on the mainland?

Alderley definitely not covered, that's where we were. Part of Bailiwick of Guernsey. Emergency treatment not covered either.

Has this changed over the years? Quite a while ago and before EHIC days I went to the cottage hospital on Alderney with a suspect broken toe (that's what comes of crewing barefoot on a yacht...), was xray'd and strapped up, all free.

I had an unconscious crew on board and the doctor would only come after I confirmed I would pay his £80 call out fee.
That was just the start.

It even worse in the States..
Me.."hello doctor I have a sick crew member"
Doc... "Will that be cash or credit card?"
A lady swmbo knows was on her honeymoon in Vietnam, both mid / late 20s , after a long coach trip she went to the hotel he went to get a local sim card, he was taken ill & hailed a taxi who took him to hospital, he was refused treatment as he hadnt got ins docs with him. the taxi driver took him back to the hotel & the drive rushed up to get the wife & docs. when they got back down to the taxi he was an ex husband. DVT was diagnosed after a butchered post mortem.
She came home with her husband in the hold.

Contrary to popular opinion the Hippocratic Oath has not been part of the medical graduation for many years AFAIK. It is however a good basis for reasonable behaviour.

As it starts "I swear by Apollo and all the Gods" it would not go down too well in many cultures anyway. :D
